Bus and lorry crash

Eighteen people have been hurt, five seriously, after a bus crashed with a lorry carrying a steam engine.

The crash happened on East Road, East Mersea, Essex, just before 09:50 BST.

The bus driver was freed by firefighters and airlifted to Royal London Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Four passengers have been taken to Colchester General.

A man, 51, from Great Yarmouth, is being held on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The road is likely to remain closed for most of the day, Essex Police said.

The force said a large proportion of the 32 passengers were either uninjured or walking wounded.

Officers believe the lorry travelled from Lowestoft, Suffolk, on Wednesday morning, and have appealed for information.

I do hope for the truck drivers sake he didn’t have that engine lashed with bloody ratchet straps! :open_mouth: (there’s one on the trailer)
Mind you, saying that, the fact that its slid off after making a turn means he’s got some crap creak action going on there anyway.

Can’t see any chains?

Can’t see any chains?

Looks like a strap hanging off the wheel

I’ve seen quite a few vintage owners with stuff on low loaders, nowhere near as secure as professional outfits would do.
Some of their vehicles used to move their stuff look like an MOT might be in order too.

It’s an unsuitable trailer and I don’t see any chains either.

how is it an unsuitable trailer?
and yes i dont see any chains either?

The owner of the traction engine ain’t gonna be too chuffed, not only has it fallen into the road, a bus has hit it as well - probably be the end of it, bit of a shame.

The traction engine will be fixed up. Their worth a mint.
Hope all involved can do the same.

As he’s been arrested for causing serious injury and a witness said it fell off the lorry on to the bus, it sounds the police believe it wasn’t secured properly.

Nasty hope the driver makes a full recovery

Wasn’t there a similar accident while back with steam engine?

bit ironic the bus sign has “general hospital” on it :open_mouth:

Hope that poor bus driver recovers as well as he can considering how bad he’s been hurt…I know some bus drivers get heckled on here but no one deserves that on the road.

And as for those poor seriously injured passengers going about their business unaware of events unfolding and those poor souls who had to work or even had to witness it too, so many people affected.

Not sure how the trailer weren’t suitable I suppose it should’ve been transported in a bulk tipper, should it■■?

As for that corner, travelled round that many a time with a wide load long reach or tracked dumper in and out of East Mersea Road (correct road name - BBC Look East researchers) for many clients in that area. It’s a tight and fast road and that particular corner was bloody dangerous…if you wasn’t from or even if you was from the area it narrows and has caught many a person unaware…only by fluke there hasn’t been more incidents there in the past!

If you swung ever so slightly wide on the line, you could bet someone would accidentally or even on purpose cut the corner. I’ve witnessed so many near misses and even involved in near misses myself there. And I’m sure a lot of the caravan hauliers in and out of there would say the same story of that main access route.

Strange about the strap comment you can use straps on semi-lows to hold things down with for a relevant weight. So not sure of that relevance as long as you know what you’re trying to hold down and they’re strong enough to secure them. Could’ve been holding down ancillary lightweight equipment underneath the roller, who knows…They’re two up from relying on nothing or a curtain to hold a load compared to other shed loads in recent history on the road.

I hope he did have chains on for his sake, but that won’t be a defence for the law of just putting some on. Need the right amount and you should have redundancy in all the chains used, should one go to keep that load in place and everyone safe.

All of us involved in moving stuff like that are gonna have our collars felt for a while round here, perhaps it’ll smarten up all of our attitudes in the industry in general and hopefully make it safer for other road users.

And if he didn’t have on…I can’t believe it’d made it all the way from Suffolk in one piece. They’re asking for any dashcam footage of his whole likely route to East Mersea…never heard of that before!! :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

If that’s the case, I don’t think he’ll be shown any leniency and rightfully so for endangering everyone including himself. However this will only established by the courts…and only the accident investigators will know this today.

Feel so sad for all those involved  Really hope they get better soon and police establish what actually happened.

dont worry too much driver will show them his dcpc card definetly worth every penny :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: oh hang on he did 5 1st aid courses so maybe not :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation:

That where i grew up, good old Mersea Island, and agree with Constantine about the bends on the road. Years ago I was a passenger in a car coming back from a party up East, and the girl who was driving cut the corner, hit the grass bank and flipped the car, with us ending up upside down in some old lady’s garden. Don’t know what was going on wrt securing the load, but if it fell off it obviously wasn’t secured enough. Hope the driver and others affected make a full recovery.

Bus drivers don’t do 1st aid as part of cpc.

Update:

Looking for something else I came across this from October.

grim for the 2 drivers…I still don’t see why its meant to be an unsuitable trailer…wtf would you want to transport a big traction engine in? a flatbed which would be worse? a tilt? or id have thought 1st choice would be a low loader.no doubt they wouldn’t have wated to use chains to scratch it or dent it,you would think a few big heavy straps would suffice.if there wanting joe public to grass up the driver with dashcam footage, then it looks like there out to crucify him.
