Do VOSA have any jurisdiction over trucks not used for hire or reward? I’dve thought they’d sit outside a rally like Blandford and make a fortune, looking at the state of some of the “classics” I see on the road. The police would have a busy day too, having a look at the “autojumblers” stocks of overpriced suspiciously obtained obsolete vehicle parts and tools.
Some of the visitors to Blandford need arresting for wearing yokel dress.
Note by “classics” I mean the transportation used for vintage tractors etc, not classic vehicles as such. I once worked for a firm who lavished money on their “vintage fleet” but scrimped and pleaded poverty when it came to the revenue earning fleet which were a right pile of ■■■■.
In the photos, I can’t see the front wheels for the traction engine…?
Could it only have been half an engine, away for more building / refurb??

The engine was returning from the Henham Steam Rally, the front axle/wheel assembly was still on the trailer near the front and appear to have sheared off. It was what is called a ‘portable engine’, ie they provide power to drive machinery but have to be towed into position as the wheels are not driven like on a traction engine or roller.

Was it in working order prior to the crash Pete or a work in progress display? A WIP might explain why it fell apart and off the trailer. A working engine would surely point the finger at insecure load.
From what I can make out that rachet strap you can see looks like a ten tonner, i use them quite a lot but you have to make sure you get them very tight.

Pretty certain that it was working Nathan, I guess that the weight of the machine sliding off sheared the turntable pivot off which was probably secured to the trailer?
Pete.
Phil & Sam Nash to the rescue
A belated further update, the bus driver appears to have been extremely lucky to survive this. From an earlier report: “I woke up and the bus is a wreck around me, passengers are screaming and I’m sitting in the seat and holding onto my stomach contents, which had just burst out.”

Just saw this on my old posts and wondered what the outcome was.
It seems a 5t strap won’t hold 6t of metal equipment…shocking physics applies to haulage.
Zbing 18 months for his pathetic attempt at securing a piece of machinery/plant.
And what an insult to those of us in the sector who endeavour to do it properly day in, day out.
A farce considering how many people he could have killed, through more than likely cutting corners.
Cruise Control:
Wasn’t there a similar accident while back with steam engine?
Yes think it was near havant couple years ago
