Hi. Newbie here (first post) I grew up in Barton and remember Burn Bros well. I rode in this Foden many times, when it was driven by a guy called Tony Lodge, or ‘Big T’
I don’t know whether this has already been covered here but AVN199B and CHN93B are the same wagon. It was AVN199B when it was in use, then it was laid up for years before being restored, As far as I am aware this was when DVLA were computerising things and the records for AVN199B were lost, so it was re-registered as CHN93B.
AVN199B was a super truck, used to absolutely howl when it was pulling. When the wind was in the right direction you could hear it pulling all the way from Barton to Scotch Corner, which is uphill all the way
p.s. I also remember Jacko, a female Macaque monkey - vicious little thing!
Thanks for the information on the two fodens and the photos of the Fodens do you have any more of Burn Bros? and do you know what happend to “Big T” him and my dad were big mates
Just got the shock of my life whilst looking for pictures of old trucks and I came across this picture of AVN. A Foden that my dad Cliff Payne drove now and then when he worked for Burns Bros in the mid to late sixties. It was normally driven by a chap called Derek Ainsley back then if my childhood memories serve me right. My dad used to drive an eight wheeler two stroke Foden, RPY------ and a Foden tractor unit that was a shortened eight legger, I think that was RVN------, he also drove their first Volvo F86, I seem to remember that was OVN 68G but I may be wrong, it was nearly fifty years ago after all. I have fantastic memories of doing the night trunk to Glasgow and back riding shotgun for my dad, they would drive in convoy to the depot in Glasgow to take a load north, then change trucks and bring that load south. I remember my dads oppo was a polish chap but I can’t recall his name at all. In the other posts there is a mention of a chap called Dixie Dean, I can certainly recall him, he was a real character and a really nice fellow, I can also remember a man called Des Ellis, who drove an AEC Mercury unit, he would constantly complain about it being to light on the front axle when fully loaded, he bumped I think Paul Burns brand new Triumph 2500PI whilst reversing into the depot one day, I remember shouting at him to stop! The monkey that is mentioned in one of the posts was called Jacko and it was indeed a vicious little sod, my dad carried a nasty scar on the back of one of his hands where the ■■■■ thing bit him for standing on it’s leash, it also hated women and would chase them out of the garage, if it got loose it would terrorise the village or get into Charlie Burns house (The Stelling) and terrorise his wife. I can remember laughing at her hustling it out with a brush one day while shouting for someone to come and help. I used to love going in with my dad on a Saturday morning to help him clean and grease round his truck ready for the following week, or sometimes he would go to Wolsingham steelworks and pick up an ingot of steel to deliver on a Monday---------- To many memories not enough space in one post. Hope you all like this.

Well that’s a great bit of nostalgia, Thank you for posting it, Regards Larry.
Glad to share my memories with you about Burn Brothers of Barton. I was only a lad of about eight when dad started taking me in the truck with him and I used to love when Friday came around so I could go on the night trunk with him, even now I get a real buzz if I need to go up the A74. I would always stop at Beattock for a nostalgic bite to eat, I can still hear the two stroke Fodens howling on up to Glasgow even now----brilliant. I always stop at Stainmore Café on the way back to, although the chocolate swiss roll slices are no where near as big as they were back in the day, ask any old trucker. Anyway enough for now, regards John.
I wondered if v7victor or davids 1600e might know who might be driving the F86 at Richmond Meet. I think it might be OVN which was their first Volvo which my Dad used to drive, I don’t think it’s him in the picture but it would be nice to know. The black and white picture of the AEC I think is CPY—C a Mandator that was driven in the late sixties by a chap that had the nickname Kitch as I recall. I was only a lad then so I hope my memory is correct.
Just seen your fantastic picture of the Foden eight wheeler, this is one of the very wagons that I wrote about in my post early in January. My dad drove this very truck back in the sixties. I would really like to know where this picture came from and if there any more. Seeing it brought the memories flooding back.
Drove past yesterday(30/05/16) and stopped to have a look. Found out that the buildings have been sold, so took a couple of pictures to remind myself of past happy days. As I remember the wash off bay was on the left just through the doors, just before the pit, and on the right wall was Jacko the monkeys cage/hutch. The lower section (where the boat is ) was where everything got parked up, God only knows how the trees got there.
