Hi all,

I’m new here, but I was wondering if any of you could tell me about this aerial photograph taken of the old BRS yard in Banbury.

This old aerial photograph is hung up in my Great Grandfather’s shed, he used to drive an artic for BRS for many years. He often tells me lots of fascinating stories about his time working there. He’s in his 80’s now, and I think he misses the job dearly! I’m also very interested in lorries and hope to have a go one day.

I’ve tried searching about this specific yard, but I only find information regarding the former BRS yard that used to be located in Merton Street in Banbury, and no mention of this one, which was situated in the Wildmere Industrial Estate. It fascinates me as the building is still there today and is currently occupied by the DAR lighting group. I also personally work very close to this building, and it makes me feel nostalgic that I’m walking almost virtually where my Great Grandfather worked, or at least where he used to park up his lorry!

I know it wasn’t always known as BRS, as I think Excel took it over, then formally merged into part of the DHL group.

Anyways, if anyone has any information on the old BRS yard, please let me know, anything at all I’d be ever so grateful as I find it so fascinating.

Looking at the cars and tractive units - none of which are very clear as the picture is blurred close up, and looking at the trailer lengths - I would date it as early ‘80s.

Thank you for your reply, that does make sense as he was definitely working there during the early 80’s.

Sadly, this is the only photo I have, and my phone has a pretty bad camera, but I’ll try and get some clearer photos next time.

I know some of the trailers have company logos on them for Banbury buildings & Maxwell house coffee if that might narrow it down a bit?

General Foods factory. Delivered there many a time in the early 80’s

I remember when that was built early '60s and General Foods Maxwell House coffee you could smell from quite a bit away, we ran Oxford to Coventry a lot along Southam Road out of Banbury.
