Has any one got some early pictures of Brs Oxford depot , early 50s or 60s please ,by the time I started in the early 80s most of the yard was sold off . thank you

I’ve put some of these on before

Hi Tidderson, that last 1 doesn’t look like Oxford to me, too many buildings too close together from my memory, Oxford was more spread out, Toshboy was on there with my Dad in the 50s but this pic took later on, I went in there regularly in the early 80s when on British Leyland Transport at Cowley (mainly to use the Cafe, lovely breakfast  ) Regards Chris

Hi TIDDERSON , It does not look like Oxford depot , but but the time I got to work there , most of it was built on , Chris do you recall where Bl use to store oil drums on Sandy lane .? it was on the right just after you turn in on the bypass ,where the office buildings are now .

I use to see a rigid off Bl transport loading in there , it was a old boy who I think lives up Wootton some where lives , it drove a Freighter with a tail lift .

Its got to be Maidstone, just look at the trolley bus wires.

So,not guildford, just another guess, how about Maidstone?as you can see Tidd’s I am just playing guess work here!!!

Maidstone depot

OK, Tidd’s got me again,I’ll have one last guess at Brighton depot, only because Uncle Jack(ex-BRS) said to try it…if not will give up and await your answer…as Uncle Jack says you know your stuff…

Hi Steve, I remember the oil drums mate, trying to think who lived at Wootton? the Freighters etc came just after I left so don’t know who would have been allocated 1 with a tail-lift, wonder if it could have been Jim Ashby, proper old-school lorry driver was Jim, real gent, was a good mate of my Dads from way-back  , he was on locals for years with a rigid!

Hi Chris , I think the guy im thinking of ,had a Cylesdale before the Freighter, but not sure if it had a tailift , were these vehicles double shifted when you were there ?

Yes Steve, the Freighters all replaced the old Clydesdale’s, some were flats with the drop-side bodies & tautliners, none of the Clydesdales had tail-lifts when I was there! Some were used on nights occasionally but none of the rigids were double-shifted regularly. Only 1 Clydesdale rigid was used every night, that was “Night Owl”, I’ve recently put a pic’ of her on the Oxford thread when I had her out 1 day, she was driven by Ted Irvine on the Air-Freight run to Heathrow every night. And another one!

Do my eyes deceive me or are both pictures of the same vehicle,
I’m sure you can just make out the reg.no. on both pictures are the same■■?
Also if you look at the nearside front you will notice the same damage showing between headlight and bumper on both pictures, also I believe that the badges in the windows are the same ones.also note that both vehicles on have one mirror.
Sorry all,but i’m just feeling like a real anorak at the moment.(sorry no offence intended…)

Hi. Those were the days ! -No near side mirrors, No power steering, One screen wiper, No cab heaters,No foglights ,
Single dip headlights.Servo braking --I could go on and on but at least we had no H&S or Vosa .tacho etc whats more there wasnt the constant carping about wages --there was national wage structures thanks to trade unions -over the years drivers have become their own worst enemies --rant over toshboy

Drove one them dogs on BRS. The gearbox was back to front.

We had a four-wheeled Thorneycroft with the same cab. Brilliant engine, overdrive gearbox and the luxury of TWO mirrors.

I wonder if anyone can help,I have been trying to obtain info on the BRS parcels operation based in halifax.I know they used the original Holdsworth & Hanson depot at Transport house Horton street.I found some original pictures in the book BRS Parcels Services & Express Carriers.there are some great images from the 1930’s.I found a couple of pictures take during the building demolition in 1985.I have attached these it to see if this helps.
Also there are some pictures of a Scammel Scarab reg no.VHW98 flt no.P4D934 which was the area fleet code for Halifax and surrounding area,I wondered if it was ever based at halifax.
So thinking caps on chaps and engage grey matter if you will please.
many thanks
Chris

Hi I have lived in Halifax all my life, and remember the Halifax depot in Horton Street very well. When I was a boy in the 50s, I lived just up the road from the Ovenden depot. In the school holidays,if I wasnt out with my older brother in his Meridith & Drew lorry,I would spend the day “driving” the green Maudley 8 leggers in the Ovenden depot ! I can just see the staff letting a young lad do that nowadays! I have searched all over for pictures of the depot, but never found any.If anyone has any photos or memories of Ovenden I would love to see them.
Regards.John.

Hi John,
didn’t know about depot at Ovenden.Took a look in"BRS the early years" and sure enough listed under West Riding District at 41D Ripponden group it lists depots at Hebden Bridge,Ripponden garage,The Triange and Ovenden dated at 1953.The companies listed are Hebden Bridge Haulage co.Beaumont Bros. and Hutchinsons, hope this might help a little.sorry no pictures but have you tried Halifax Library.I am at Elland and both my wife and I are disabled so don’t get much chance to go.would love to know if they have any records for either Horton street or Ovenden.Regards Chris

hiya,
Chrisb01 in that magic book of yours was there ever a BRS depot in Malton,
I seem to recall fuelling up there in the late 50s can’t remember if it was a
general or parcels depot but it is possible it was somewhere else but I feel
somehow it was Malton not to far from the level crossing if I’m correct.
thanks harry, long retired.

Malton depot was a general haulage depot in the York district. It was at 19A Saville Street. I was up there a
week ago but found nothing. They had 2D fleet numbers in the fifties then DA

hiya,
Thanks for that I seem to remember it now, I was en-route from Fylingdales early warning
station I don’t know what I was carrying but it was hush hush and I had to go directly to an
American plane at Manchester airport and with an ■■■■■■ straight onto the tarmac and up
to the waiting aircraft it was the only time when working for the BRS that I was OKd to run
bent I got unloaded one sealed six feet by four feet trunk with radio active stickers all over
it, I was on duty from seven AM to nearly midnight that shift and got paid every minute and
a dodgy night out and a lie in thrown in I did a sneaky flyer home about an hour’s drive that
time of night and I only lived ten minutes from Blackburn depot in those days.
thanks harry, long retired.
