The buses would be used to round up all the drivers working dodgies I guess?
Pete.
hiya,
BRS drivers doing dodgieās perish the thought we always ran straight.
thanks harry, long retired.
Harry ,why dont they believe us ,the most legal outfit to ever to operate in this country, when did any of us got punished for these alleged misdeeds what proof is there ? iām claiming to be anonymous under the 50 year rule
On 2 occasions I was on a dodgy and stopped at the local chippy for some tea, whilst waiting in the queue in walks the boss
āthought youād be on a night out tonight?ā he said, I am I replied ( I was 30 mls from base !) he just laughed and said āI havenāt seen you thenā
He was an ex. driver and knew the craic, he didnāt mind as I would go in early the next day and do an extra load.
I had almost reached home on a dodgy and was pulling in to a local lay by at about midnight when a drunk driver decided to run under my trailer, totalling his car.
Thinking I would be guaranteed the sack and possibly a holiday at Her Majestyās resort, I turned in to the yard next morning to report my misdemeanour. After listening to the true story of what happened, all the manager wanted to know was, āHave you got a log sheet to cover the time?ā Of course, I had (not THAT stupid) so after completing the accident report form I heard no more about the incident.
Years later I ran cross the manager in a shop and asked him why he had been so lenient. He told me that 1) he didnāt want to lose one of his best drivers and 2) it would have created a whole load of paperwork for him!
Decent bloke- Iāve never forgotten him.
hiya,
A Maudslay Mikado of 1939 vintage pulling a drawbar trailer was one of
my first ādrivesā as a 21 year old back in 1957 got to admit I didnāt stick
it for very long, Ohā and my trailer āboyā could remember it arriving at
the yard brand new just before he got called up for military service in
World War 2, Iād finished National Service about a year before 1956.

I got punished for a dodgy, if you can call a reprimand punishment, that is. I parked up in the cattle market in Bedford one night, five minutes from the depot and one of the traffic clerks (not Clive) saw my lorry and dobbed me in. I should have parked up in Shefford, where I lived but I needed my car that night. What a Kangaroo Court I had to front up to at the hearing. The Leicester Area manager came down to the depot to officiate as well as the Bedford manager and the dobbing traffic clerk was called to give evidence. I had the depot union rep on my side which was a good job as I was threatened with the sack. They didnāt even pay me the night out money over it.

Yes ! Iāve worked with all those blokes, Barry Jarman top row right went on to be a driving instructor at BRS and then later manager at Preston depot.
John Parsons (bottom left) was a good mate and we ran everywhere together and was one of the best drivers Iāve ever come across, we lost him at the young age of 42 (RIP mate). Roy Withers (centre) won lorry driver of the year, I spoke to him last year at Lincoln farm BRS do. Mick Beamson I havenāt seen for years, his depot was Wellington Shrops and I worked from there often on general haulage with him.
The Transcon was one of many on the Ford contract at Bromford lane Bāham, the Bristol 290 HOA belonged to Dave Tarbuck at the BRS driving school, (I got to drive it once !)
Remember them all, a great bunch of blokes to work with.
