I reckon it was a dual purpose idea slicks for the dry and thread for for the wet roads F1 as copied again
cheers Johnnie
Now if the “slicky” tyre had been on the fron’t axle and the “tread” on the second steer, now that would be to invite trouble! But them old lads new how to get the best out of their rubber in the safest way.And you have to remember that in those years a lot of gear was in short supply so you had to sqeeze every mile out of a tyre, even beyond the “acceptable” even for those far off years!! Bewick.

hiya,
These pics bring back memories just how the old BRS yards used to look when I got my first start with them in the late 50s, always a mixed bag of entirely British motors, the only difference with our place it was completely undercover but just as busy although quite pleasant when transhipping or roping and sheeting when the weather was bad, was I spoiled or what, the yard is still there and still in use by a timber company, drove past a little while ago and imagined myself just vanishing through the front entrance with the old Octopus and trailer, happy days.

My old foreman Joe told me he drove an AEC 8 legger at Brum and often back loaded from Ockley bricks nr. Guildford, looks very much like him in the picture, an ex coldstream guard I got a few clips round the ear off him

hiya,
The BRS got their money’s worth out of these old girls, I got my first start at Blackburn depot in 1958 aged 22 there was several of these in 8 wheeler and artic form, as dependable as the day was long and although a bit spartan and zero extras they was quite warm, the ride was a bit hard and many drivers claimed compensation for bad backs, in the mid 60s when I got a second start at Blackburn, depot “was made redundant in the early 60s” and the Bristols were still evident most of them from the early 50s, you never saw them broken down and although dated the maintainance was done to a high degree, still plenty about on the “show” circuit which proves how good they was and they wasn’t affected too badly with the tin worm.

I can remember in the early 70’s of stoppping at both of them depot’s, both were nice places to bunker up, I was on Camping Gaz the last time at Bladby.

There’s a book called Bristol Goods Vehicles by Janes and Sposito that lists all the details of all the lorries made ,plus their reg. no.s and fleet numbers. The latter info. come from my fleet lists of the depots I collected as a BRS spotter in the 50’s and 60’s !

Longwell Green Coachworks where the Bristol cabs were built. Conditions were a bit spartan.
Official photo taken in the lane outside the gate. Some photos have a manure heap behind the hedge.
Three photos taken at Spring Street depot Bristol. Just off the river. The one on the right has been recabed with an artic cab.
Three of the four HG,s that have been restored. The one on the left is the second one built and was presented to the museum in Bristol by BRS when it was withdrawn. I got it out on the road a couple of years ago and took it to a few shows including Lincoln Farm.
Nice to see that someone has got some useful info from the book I wrote about Bristol goods vehicles years ago. No firm was interested in printing it so Allen Janes and myself paid for it to be printed ourselves. This was pre computer days when all the photos had to be converted to dots and pasted up so it was a challenge. I still have some new copies, A4. 80 pages if anyone is interested in buying one please PM me.
Cheers Phil Sposito (Numbum, but not anymore retired now the old Bristol was the last lorry i drove)
