Great photos, and info as well BONUS thanks lads keep them coming yours nigel.
Love it - a York HoBo in the last picture, unless I’m mistaken…
Good company to drive for with excellent pay and working conditions, i was employed at the Oakamoor Quarry mid 70s and did days/nights running to Uxbridge, Camberley, Redhill, Wrexham & Spennymoor with silica sand in 3 compartment tankers.
The small fleet at Moneystone quarry then consisted of 2 ERF Gardner 180 tractor units, 1 ERF 8 wheeler tanker and a 6 wheel Scammel 3 non tip tankers plus a tipping trailer for local work to Johnsons tiles at Longport etc.
There was a small quarry at Bramcote nr Nottingham which supplied sand with a few 4 wheel tippers to local foundries.
Most of the Oakamoor production went to glass bottle factories at St Helens, Worksop and Wigan by rail in open wagons until the line closed, then it was switched to road.
Sadly as John says the Moneystone site is in process of been cleared to make way for a liesure complex with a few hundred log cabins to follow in due coarse. Happy days…
I worked for BIS at Redhill from 1973 to 79, first in the lorry shop as a fitter and then moved across to the mobile plant shop after a fall out with the manager. Bill Broughton was the transport manager at that time.
The fleet consisted of Seddon brick lorries both tippers and flats, 8wheeler ERF tankers and then an Atkinson with a flour tank and later Seddon Atkinson tankers. Two ERF tippers and later an Atkinson tipper jioned later by a Foden from up north. ERF artics followed by Atkinsons and later Seddon Atkinsons also one Leyland LAD cab six wheeler tanker.
We had few subbies Bob Ploughman, John Wiseman an Ernie who drove a Commer two stroke and later a KM Bedford both keep as clean as new pins.
Some of the people that I worked with, Tom Cobley, Ron Atkins, Bob Fuller mobile plant fitters. Ronnie Cobley and Ted can’t remember his surname, Les Parfitt and Ceril Corston welders. Tom Sanderson RIP, Chris Stevens, Mick Crump,Morris Thompson, Percy Woods, Harry somebody all drivers. Bob Gallop, the two Chrises and Mick Shaw from Mercers Farm.
Ginger Olman and John Upton from Godstone Pit. Des Snelling who I had the fall out with and turned out to be a nice person, I had just pee ed him off at the time. There are a lot more faces I can remember but names have gone for now.
It was a good company to work for.

Correct - Messingham was a small one
Also there was another on nr Chelford which I cannot remember the name of (Water… something I think).
We go into WBB at Dingle Bank Chelford, Leziate Kings Lynn and Godstone quarries.
Here’s one I found on here from a few years ago, copied from a book apparently. Norfolk reg. so probably based at Leziate near Kings Lynn.

It certainly has not been scanned from a book! It is an image from a Roger Kenney negative which I scanned for the followers of a Thames Trader thread on this forum a year or so ago.

Hi John, Can’t remember any pigeon loft. I think the bagging plant was near the boot or pit that was keep feed by the drier lorry, They were a good bunch of lads but us to smash the drier lorry to bits. Bill Tullet was the plant foreman, known for being a bit of a hardman but keep on his good side was a really nice bloke. He always stood up for his men.

John
The thread has come to a stand still. Their must be others that have worked for B I S that could add some history, no matter which quarry you have worked in. Anyone remember me at Redhill or Godstone, I am Paul Milliam, worked as a lorry fitter and moved over to mobile plant.
Here’s a late ERF LV 8 wheeler for you.
It’s a model LAG304 with the 7LV cab.
Not sure of it’s location.
WBB is now Sebelko; I’ve loaded with play sand out of the new site at Godstone (had it called “Redhill Sand” when delivering it to some playground builders). I’ve loaded a couple of times out of Heath and Reach near the Agg Industries pit.
Last time I loaded out of Godstone, there were NIMBYs waving placards near the narrow lane you have to cross. Cleanest quarry I’ve ever been to.

I moved to Kings Lynn Norfolk area in march 1979 and Godstone quarry that you have been too was opened a few years before I moved. That was the new pit, the Pink and the Blue that the road from the roundabout runs around were the old quarries. The Pink finished in about 1977, we had a couple of old electric RB 55 draglines that were scraped at that time.
I did wonder if those fields were reinstated workings.
