Nigel,I think the British Industrial Sand site you mean was at Middleton, east of King’s Lynn on the A47. I remember them running those black and white LAD cabbed Leyland Octopussies/Octopi tippers in the early 60s.I had lifts with their night men when I was in the RAF in Norfolk and they delivered sand to the Yorkshire glass works. In the 70s they ran ERF 8-wheeler tankers out of Congleton, running foundry sand into Sheffield,Penistone and other places, most were double-shifted.The livery was the later one with the camel on.
No photos though,sorry.

Hi, All,
No prizes but that camel on BIS trucks had a name , can anyone remember it?
I think BIS is now WBB Minerals, and Seafields do a lot for them out of the Congleton area.

Cheers Bassman

Hi Bassman

The camel is called CUTHBERT !!

They had depots at :-

Bent Farm Quarry, Congleton
Chelford, nr Macclesfeild
Oakamoor Quarry
Redhill in Surry
A chemical sand mixing plant in West Brom
Quarry in Kings Lynn
and a Quarry at Livingstone in Soctland

Approx. 95% were all ERF’s artics were a mix of day and sleeper cabs with mostly Metalair tanks and tippers, quite a few 8 ERF wheel tankers and 1 Sed Atki 6 wheeler.

They were bought out by WBB and are now all named Sibeco.

Cheers
Steve

BTW - I worked at Bent Farm quarry for 3 years in the traffic office in the late 1980’s

Hope this helps.

Hi Bassman

Correct - Messingham was a small one

Also there was another on nr Chelford which I cannot remember the name of (Water… something I think).

SSPROS1965,

It wasn,t very big ,I had a couple of mates worked for BIS out of there in the early 70’s. I think they mainly used to do Castleford, Knottingley And I think Morpeth. Obviously did more than that but I think they were the main customers.

Cheers Bassman

My brother in law drove for bis out of Redhill Surrey, back in the early 80’s.
They were on Holmethorpe Industrial Estate,Redhill
I took this one returning to there yard,as they had to pass my dads old firm Hall Aggregates.
My sister use to go with him on the overnight runs  i thought she liked lorries

Hiya… bis used to be big scammell users. theres still a trunker in rush green in the bis livery.
i used to do sand from kings lynn to west brom on a return load. i loaded with the normans 3/4 cab Macks.
(they was bound for barnsley) years later i did sand from redhill back to chester(1 ton bulk bags),
in the late 70,s i did moneystone quarry at oakamoor to St Helens(thats now gone)i was at a party a couple of
hundred yards away in may , i walked down to the quarry…the place looked sorryful.
I,ve done work from Chelford but can,nt remember where to.possibly wigan.
i once knew a chap who put the cammel on the motors but his name has gone from my head.

The sand transport is run from Winsford nowadays. a pal of mine works from there for seafield out of Chelford.
