Hi Axeltramp,
The pub in Bristol was The Garricks Head. I hope you never had to bend over to pick anything up when you were in there.
The Hatchet is the very old pub that stood on its own the other side of the road from the entertainment centre. The only ■■■■■■■■■■ that I can remember up steps was The Globetrotters.
Phil.
Had some good night’s out there.
Late seventys. Sissons of Sherburn.
A regular haunt of mine all the pubs as mentioned but never seen F1 themed pub, Boat as mentioned & there was a little green hut did cups of tea & sandwhiches but a bit of a dump. There was another pub just off the top end of the Marsh did meals i once had the misfortune to have ordered a meal & being on the pay phone to the missus when my meal arrived, Here Love! I shouted thats me, the Love bit took some explaining . Another night me & a few Elddis lads ended up at the Mecca (as you do) one of them refused entry no tie so one of the others took his belt off fastened it round his neck Bouncers ok son in you go. Same lad no longer with us RIP but I work with his son now.Last time I was in Cannons Marsh was 4 yrs ago had a week on a Narrow boat Devices to Bristol & back had a night out in Bristol with the missus for a change.
Somebody else mentioned Juniper Berry earlier thats Southampton & a whole other story, making me smile just thinking about it.
Hi FOLKS , I parked up one night on a car park in the centre of Bristol. I was a bit early, so i thought i would go to the cinema, which was across the road from the lorry park. I went pay at the booth and asked the cashier, “How much”. She said ten bob, so i replied ten bob to go to the cinema and she replied this is not the cinema this is the theatre. So rather than feeling like a fool i paid and went in.It was the first time i had ever been to a theatre and i thoroughly enjoyed myself. It was called Have your cake and eat it. Starring Alfie Bass and Bill Frazer. I came out at about a quarter to ten and went up one of the side streets to a little pub. Whilst having a pint some of the cast came in for a drink. I can’t think what the car park was called. Does anyone have any idea please. Cheers Barry
Hi b.waddy,
That would have been Canons Marsh that you parked in, it was a car park during the day. It was in a dead area but 5 minutes walk brought you to the city centre. The Hippodrome theatre was over to the left and the pub in the narrow street next to it was The Bunch of Grapes that was facing the theatre stage door entrance.
For the old drivers who used it the Mecca and the grab a Granny night have gone. From memory some of the grannys did not need much grabbing they leapt at you.
Couple of Stories concerning Cannons marsh I remember just about getting blocked in by cars when I had my Volvo 86 & 40fter after prob in Mecca bit late getting out of bed managed to get out just Its also the place I stopped smoking ■■■■, Had a quiet night on the boat me one of my mates off Collinson Bros & one of Van Hees lads it would be late 70s I had my f88 at the time any way bought myself some ■■■■ out of the machine 18 in a pack them days tried to light one up & just coughed me heart out , went to bed got up next morning tried a ■■■ again same thing couldnt face a smoke & thats from 30/40 a day man. numbum mentioned the other bonded warehouse `s at ■■■■■■■■■■ basin, there used to be a lorry park next to one of them one time oppisite the Ventura cafe & if bubbleman was an anorack & took photos on cannons Marsh lets have them on here mate.
What about the Idea of keepin clean? The old public swimming bath"s just down the rd good swim scrub up ready for all the afore mentioned joint"s Cheers Chris. 70s.
There,s been a few mentions of Canon Marsh Park Bristol in late 70s/early 80s on here from time to time, need to settle an argument (with myself ) was that the one where there was a nearby bar that was Formula1 themed, with pics of F1 cars and drivers, and the seats were 5gall oil drums, also a bar on an old ship, only stayed there a couple of times, and is C.Park still open?
I don’t remember that pub at all, I would probably made a very hasty exit from that description. Anyway Cannons Marsh is right in the city centre next to the dock. It’smany years since I was there but I remember it was just off a huge oval shaped roundabout then past the Arnolfini Art gallery. regards kevmac47. Ps great night out then!!
Hi,
I lived in Bristol so I only went in Canons Marsh lorry park to take photos. The large concrete warehouses that stood behind the park were blown up many years ago and the whole area is now redeveloped with public spaces, fountains, bars and a hotel.
The ship with a bar which was quite big was the lochiel an old scottish ferry which ended up scrapped .I cant remember a cafe but Bubbleman is a Bristolian and he may come up with something.
The Google photo is the lorry park today seen from the road. The white bit with the arch is the old derelict goods shed with the arches along the side and a tin roof. This has been incorporated into the new building.
Ah Canons Marsh,my favorite place to take pictures,as Phil said its all gone now and the boat that the overnighters used was indeed the Lochiel.I dont remember a pub decked out in F1 stuff but then I never had a night out there.I do remember a compound separated from the main lorry park with a grey coloured bus which was a cafe but this dissapeared and the ground became part of the main lorry park.
For the lorry anorak like me it was a magic place as literally 70 -80 plus lorries could park up overnight, for the driver it was a stones throw from food, booze and fanny .
Cheers Bubbs,
the lorry park in cannons marsh has been gone for a few yrs now. its now all offices and banks and the council in bristol thinks there is no need for a lorry park nowt unusual with that same as every council in the country
Stayed there a lot during the early 80’s,the big warehouses at the back were tobbacco bonds, full of raw tobbacco leaf.
I don’t remember a F1 themed pub either, but there was another pub just around the corner (was it The Juniper Berry■■?) that we used to go in before hitting The Mecca!
The Juniper Berry was in Southampton!
I think the nearest pub to Canon’s Marsh was The Garrick, demolished late 70’s or early 80’s.
I used to eat at the Harlequin cafe in Denmark Street, then usually into The Bunch of Grapes, also in Denmark Street
(saw Harry Worth having a drink in there once) then it was off to The Hatchet forra few in there. There was a ■■■■■■■■■■
up some steps to a main road where you got searched on entry and a stamp on your hand to show you’d paid.
Blondie’s Atomic had just been released and it was played most of the night in The Hatchet.
This was when drivers went out socialising on an evening instead of fornicating in the cab all night.

I can’t remember the F1 pub but I do remember going in The Garrick and then onto what I thought was The Top Rank Suite although it could of been The Mecca. Wasn’t there a Wimpey Bar close to Canons Marsh where all the drivers used to go and I think that those huge tobacco warehouses had W.D. & H.R. Wills written on them and did one have Harvey’s Of Bristol. There was usually at least half a dozen drivers leaving the lorry park at the same time ready to hit the town as Bristol on a Thursday night was the place to be .
A few more photos of the places that have been mentioned in these posts to jolt your memories.
The Bunch of Grapes and the Rendevous in Denmark Street.
Walk up the road and you come to The Hatchet. The Mecca was behind it and the ice rink.
The black place was the Top Rank Suite next to the Odeon cinema.Went through the door and up a lot of stairs. Word was if you caused any trouble the bouncers helped you leave by throwing you back down the stairs.
There was a Wimpy bar on a corner on the steep hill that went away from the lorry park area.

Hi Numbum,
There were more than a few suspect characters frequented The Garricks Head, but usually being able to keep my wits about me I never suffered from a sore arse, it was always a sore head that bothered me most.
Looks like nobody remembers the F1 bar, had a think it was 1978, I,m getting worried now was I halus hallucinat haluccin seeing things, I can,t remember smoking summat, am I showing first signs of dementia, somebody say they have been there please
