I take it with them seizing the truck we are talking more than a pouch or two over the guidelines.

A lesson to be learn’t.

To be honest, I think you would have to be more specific about the amount before we could draw any hard and fast conclusions. You should be aware that Customs become very suspicious if you have several different brands of tobacco or cigarettes, reasoning that since most people smoke the same brand when they have the option, that the purchase has been made to a “shopping list”.

When you say a fair ammount do you mean 10’s of kilo’s or 100’s of kilo’s?

is that alot :question: :question: ive no idea about weight of tobacco. was it well hidden then found or was it just laid on the top bunk.

25kg ==25 000 grams

now bearing in mind 50g will set you back £10.00 at shops thats quite a heafty sum you have been caught with to be honest

£200 for 1000grams x 25 would end up costing you about £5.000 to purchase in the shops

think i got my figures right and if i have you woulkd of been better of fetching a trailer full in because thats quite a lot for persnal use .

i smoke quite heavily and that would last me in the region of 9yrs and i will have 30-40 a day

if i have got my calculations correct am not supprised they stopped you .

my advice is get good solicter because you will be lucky with just a unpaid work charge as it aint vast amounts but could still mean comunity service .

To put 25kg in perspective, the amount that customs ‘allow’ infrequent travellers before they start asking questions, is 3kg of tobacco. That’s 6 packs of 10 x 50g packets. A 50 g pack is the large size usually available in a shop, it costs in the region of £10.

so " bang to rights " comes to mind. :laughing:

But surely tobacco is a good that is in free circulation?

I was stopped at the tunnel about 3yrs ago and directed into the lanes where they asked me if i had any tobacco or alcohol.As it was lying onthe bottom bunk i said yes ,3kg of golden virginia,anyway after a full strip out of my cab and 2 of them crawling all over the 26pallets of frozen bread in the back,three of them cornered me against the cab and said the GV wasn,t for my personal use,that i was smuggling it,and it would be confiscated,they were right up in my face,really threatening and intimidating,when i told them to f off,i was arrested,the truck was impounded and i was marched into the interveiw rooms and held until they decided what would happen.Eventually an older,what i would call proper old school officer appeared(ie not dressed up like some wannabe stormtrooper)and confiscated the baccy,fined me £150 and let me have my wagon back for a further £150.Apparently “i didn,t look like a smoker,you don,t smell of smoke and your cabs too clean”.

I wouldn’t have thought they’d worried about 3kg. :open_mouth: maybe they’d had a false tip off and were a bit narked when they couldn’t find pallets of the stuff, so they did you anyway. :confused:

The most I ever bring home is 1kg, but even if I had more and got stopped I would point out that they are presents, you are allowed to give the stuff away, which I do to my family because they are all to tight to pay me :unamused:
