ooooooooooffffffttttt,thats a stonker,if your gunna duit,duit right
.
Correct me if I’m wrong, the marked bridge heights are the safe maximum vehicle height that can pass safely under a bridge. They are not the actual measurement of the headroom. Therefore taking a 14 ft 3 lorry under a bridge marked 14 ft 3 is totally acceptable and is what is expected.
I was confused on this issue and found on the internet information relating to bridge signage which confirmed the above, was a highways document I think.
The guy mentioning taking a 14 ft 2 under a 14 ft 3 is entirely normal, it does not mean he had 1 inch clearance.
Can someone confirm that my thinking is correct and it’s not me that has got this wrong?
The only thing to remember in all this is the actual pin height when calculating overall trailer height because it can make a difference to the stated trailer height.
Mega
Id never take what it says on the front of a trailer for granted, when you think about how much tread is on the tyres ,how heavy the loads is ,if the centre lift is up.etc etc,the safe bet is allways give yourself a good few inches and crawl under, unless you want to end up like some of the photos on this thread,i dont like bridges they scare me to death
Don’t be scared Seth, bridges are generally very peaceful creatures. I rarely, if ever hear of them attacking us, normally it’s the other way around.

How little you know Moaster, the bridges in Yorkshire have teeth and if they don’t get you goin under, they bite your bum on the way out !!

Don’t want to derail the thread but does anyone know how much it costs when trains are delayed through things like this ?
People have quoted to me all sorts of amounts including £1000 per minute from the time of the call to the line re-opening.
Kinda expensive for the insurance companies if that’s right :S

Depends on the line really, but if you manage to close one of the main flyer routes, especially London > Scotland, it’s well up into those figures. I’m sure a figure of £26k an hour was floating around when Builders supply managed to wedge a crane lorry under a bridge on the Kendal line
I still say it just wanted it’s belly tickling

Surely they could have just reversed that out of there for a quick fix

That’s just what i thought.
It’s going to take a few packs of butter to get that out
Most of us on here bang on about how professional we are and should be paid more for our skills etc, so surely it can’t be that difficult to ensure that we never strike a bridge. All trailers have (or should have)their heights marked up and bridges under a certain height are marked up so what is the problem?

it could be the drivers dont understand english ? or new drivers who need a sat nav so there lost without one and just dont know how to focus on sign posts anymore like we had to ?
it really does beggar belief when i hear or see bridge strikes as there is no defense for a driver. i tend to think drivers follow sat navs anywhere these days even if it means going up duel carrageways the wrong way lol
Believe it or not, bridge strikes happened long before satnavs were around.

are you perfect? have you ever made a mistake?
All to easy to do as human nature comes into it and that makes nobody perfect. I nearly hit one only 15 miles from our depo I had went round the diversion route on the way up in the morning came down in the afternoon forgot it was the high trailer and luckily realised when I was about 200yds of it and managed to get turned.
