Have ever made a mistake?
Never hit a bridge and I’ve done a lot of mileage with double deckers. MK1 eyeball connected to functioning brain is all that is needed.
Dude, you want to get your eyes tested!! Despite my mistake, the question was - have you ever made a mistake? I didn’t ask the poster if they’d made the mistake of hitting a bridge.
So, have you ever made a mistake? Other than this one
I don’t understand sometimes how we drivers make daft mistakes like hitting bridges or losing a trailer, we all know the dimensions of our vehicles and what checks to carrie out, but still some of us have been driving years yet still we make daft and silly mistakes far to much complacency me thinks

0 Today on George’s Road, Stockport.
Absolutely no excuse he had plenty of clearance had he used the centre of the road.
Full article here in the Manchester Evening News.
ah Georges road used to work in the signalbox that controlled the line over it unbelievable the amount of times it gets hit tho usualy from the opposite side . the signalbox has special instructions that the line closest in the picture is closed if struck from that side but the remaining three can still be used for an hour with out inspection if hit from the otherside as in the picture the whole lot gets stopped was a pain in the arse for the signalman
Came across a couple of other views of that hay lorry.
It’s amazing, today while I was out and about, and I thought of a question about bridges, and ho, someone has already revived a Bridge Strike thread.
There is a bridge on the A410 (I think) in between Barnet and Cockfosters. It is marked 15’3" give or take, and it’s also marked the same on my Sat Nav. All is good.
When I go under it there is an additional sign underneath the height marker is a sign saying for vehicles over 40’ in length bridge height is only 14’6". I run at 12’6" so it didn’t matter to me. It was obviously because the bridge was on a hill…
But the point is I couldn’t see anything else about the lower height until it was too late. By the time you could read the sign you were long past the point of no return. Is this sort of sign common? Has anyone else come along similar before?

WTF.
The bridge cross section is at his eye level, how the ■■■■ could he not see it. Further proves that the nation’s truck drivers really are thick [zb]s.
Maybe something like this might be in order!

I’ve seen something like that, possibly that very bridge in fact. I was around that way with a 14’9" trailer a few years ago. I saw the first sign, thought “no problem”, then came off a mini roundabout to just past the point of no return to be confronted with the second. I went under anyway, slowly and carefully and prepared to stop at the first sign of trouble, and got away with it. But it stuck in my mind …

Clever solution.
Clever technology creates the illusion of a solid sign, forcing the drivers to stop - but if they cannot halt in time, it won’t have any physical impact on the vehicle.
I think the tunnel will have enough physical impact on the vehicle!!
Left hand down!:

WTF.
“WARNING VERY LOW BRIDGE” sitting on a sign almost lower than his seat and he still tries it … wonder if driver was tested for alcohol / drugs
To be fair to him they could have made the signage clearer.
Can’t see any signs of skid marks either. Hard to think what you could be doing to cause that degree of inattention.
A good while ago an artic hit the bridge on Randolph St. in Camden where the North London Line crosses.
The trailer was tilted right up on its side. Everyone standing around looking were saying he’ll get a big fine for that. The driver said he hadn’t seen any sign and thought it was 16’ 6". The sign was there but was turned 90 degrees on its post so thin side on.
When the police turned up they agreed that it would have been difficult for the driver to see.
I attempt to set the combination height on the display as you’re supposed to. However,in the past for other hauliers have come across trailers that don’t have their heights displayed anywhere on the trailer (relative to 5th wheel coupling heights). I asked the offices and got a vague response.
Every trailer type can’t presumed to be exactly the same height and everything else in between is guess work. And before anyone mentions that you should know various heights of all the trailers as if by magic like t’ old days. Thats fine. But haulage wants to go all professional and standardised with procedures. Just quite on earth where is that information displayed if not actually on the trailer? It wasnt taught, there’s no standard info sheet from the haulier, there’s nothing in writing for “the Gerry Adams mcfreezing this height, the Schmitz double height ■■■■■■■ that”. Vosa of course don’t know.
I’m pretty used to taking a serious amount of self responsibility but without the actual source material being available you’re back to guesswork. Not very good. I’m going to buy a long tape measure from B and Q
Took a truck out one day and i thought the height limiter was a clock, it said 13.02 but when i looked at my watch it said 12.05 so i changed it

Whilst on the subject, those height limiters in the cab…are they compulsory, i believe they are, in which case there shouldnt be any discrepancies with bridge heights, providing all of the companies vehicles have the same height fifth wheel, and the limiter has been set correctly, suppose its advisable to carry a measuring stick, commonly known as a tape measure.

I never bother changing them in the cab. I know how high my trailer is, I don’t need someone to flash to tell me. Oh, wrong thread sorry.
I’m just sticking with me tape measure I’ve just bought for when in doubt and no gen on the box, although it’ll prob look like I’m measuring a kitchen
Greenford road in Greenford has a bridge at 15ft 6.But we take 16ft double deckers under it when going in to London palletways.I ■■■■ myself everytime, especially when im told it has been hit numerous times by other night trunkers.Apparently there is no other way in to Palletways through the night, unless someone on here can enlighten me.
