BRIDGE STRIKES.

Quite frightening how absolutely thick some people are, but fortunately this bridge is not in the UK.

Only in America… maybe.

Is it me or did half of them not bother breaking even after hitting the bridge…

Glad to see a bridge made properly, solid, bit of kit, or the trucks are made of paper mache.

A bus driver who drove a double deck bus into this bridge has got eight points and a £500 fine.

It says he had already lost his job, but doesn’t say if Stagecoach also sacked the planner who sent him out on the route in a double decker.

Does it matter who sent him out. If he couldn’t see that a decker wouldn’t go under there, well…

You would hope that they would realise that the bus wasn’t suitable before leaving the yard, since that bridge is quite an obvious feature of the route.

But you can see why a driver might not be looking at things like height limits when following a route they’ve driven repeatedly in the past, as opposed to navigating a route by signs.
He obviously should have realised he was driving a double decker when faced with a low arch in front of him, but being on the phone wouldn’t have helped.

It does make you wonder what processes the company has in place if someone can allocate the wrong bus for the route and the driver doesn’t realise either when he’s handed the keys to a double decker.
I wonder if the TC will be inviting the TM for an explanation…

I’m sorry to say this but this driver must be utterly gormless.

When he approached the vehicle to drive it, he didn’t notice it had two stories instead of one?

Felt different on roundabouts and corners, perhaps?

People clattering up and down the stairs just behind his head might have been a give away?

Its not a recent thing!

An eye witness reported that the Blackburn-bound truck appeared to have misjudged the height of the bridge.

By jove Watson,I think they might be right.

To be fair, he was only 2ft too high and had a good excuse for not noticing in that he was looking at his mobile.

Am always amazed at crap heights on trailers .

Some in feet , some in meters , some from floor and some from pin .

Then units without 5th wheel height marked .

Is a mess .and ive been told that whilst in cab markers are a requirement it is not a requirement for trailer MOTs to have any height marked on them .

This sounds wrong to me , but know for a fact that trailers can pass an MOT in Bridgwater unmarked .

Ur ability to breathe does it for us…

How about just carrying a tape measure and to stop whining?

not been self&hasty trained in use of tape measure love .

besides its my job to read heights on trailers and change in cab thingy

not to jump 15 ft to measure the bloody thing

The best one I seen for real was an artic got stuck doing a turn under the gantry roof of a loading bay on the team valley. The driver was having none of it and in his efforts to get away the tractor was doing wheelies, front wheels lifting a couple of feet off the ground, eventually a good bit of his trailer roof ripped off, then he just carried on as if it had never happened.

My own personal mini disaster; renewed the rear springs on my land rover (series2 leaf springs) when I pulled out of the garage the new height buggered the garage door surround, took me longer to fix that than it did to replace the springs

Why is it always the driver who always gets it,transport managers , local councils , driver agency,s and, company,s all have responsibilities to ensure our safety . Just a simple few safety checks could avoid bridge strikes. :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

In this day and age there must be a few simple safety devices out there to stop this happening…sensor,s lights ,signs, bridge marked on the road .yet it,s been happening for years with no real progress. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

Why don,t councils put up led sign,s that flash bridge …this would be a start.

If you’re a professional HGV Driver how can you hit a bridge!

i wonder how much of a bung the driver got from the shopkeeper to take a run at the old bridge …

I see the driver is named in wikipedia - fame for ever.
looks like they made a good job of rebuilding it

See the old boy on the footpath having a look to see if Humber Warehousing’s coming through again.

It’s the mentality “I’ll just take this gamble… 15’10” under this 15’9" bridge… They always allowed a few inches leeway don’t they?"

I’d say the “leeway” works against you rather than for you.

How many times does a road change height reducing the bridge height due to say, re-surfacing?
The only way the bridge is ever going to increase height is by the road being gouged out deeper… Anyone know of this occuring near them?

I’ve toyed with the idea of getting a laser measure, anyone else tried one? Any good? Recommendations etc for which to buy.

This bridge now looks like this:

That was increased from 4.3m to 4.7m clearance, but that was done by SSE to build a wind farm.
