In common with other arched bridges, it is marked with “goalposts” to show the available width at the marked height. Also bear in mind that a bridge marked 16’ 3" should actually be at the very least 16’ 6", and could be close to 16’ 9". When marking the bridges, the authorities are supposed to round down to the next whole 3 inches, and then knock another 3 inches off for clearance.
are you sure about that? the 16’ bridge at Grantham IS 16’.our 16’1’’ deckers can’t get under (safely!).
As much as I hate council bods, the Flintshire council bod is correct, often the bridge signs don’t convert exactly, but as long as neither is higher than the actual bridge, then it’s fine, no problem at all.
ie, a bridge can be signed up 14’9, as long as the bridge is MORE than 14’9 (14’9 being the height for safe passage of a vehicle), like the one near me on Wakefield Road, and looks like they’re going to do with the one near Asda, has had it’s signed height lowered to try to encourage trucks to go round - NIMBY’s - but the bridge is still the same height.
It’s like the metal bridge as you go into Birkenhead docks shows the bridge is 16’0 and our decker are 16’2"and go through ok.
If you go out of walsall towards shire oak there’s a bridge marked 14’0" and double decker buses go under but they look taller than 14 feet.
I heard a big bang yesterday afternoon, this was what caused it: tinyurl.com/pxagm9f
This bridge does get hit now and then, as the report says one of the warning signs was obscured by foliage. Although its only 11’6" readymixed concrete trucks fit under with no trouble.

I thought the highest bridge comming into grantham was gonerby road and I thought that was 15 ft 9 ,barrowby rd,harlaxton rd are all lower I thought ,springfield rd much lower ,or am I missing a bridge
There are a few ways into grantham with a d/d ,one being come of a1 North just past ponton along spittle gate level and down hill past aldi ,Macy d ,if s/ b you could risk a u- turn at pontoon across a1 or best down to colter worth then come back n/ b ,sleaford you can come in from ,also a 52 down past ta camp into town .
There are other ways but rat runs and the local residents ( including me ) will soon be on your case if you use them .
N.b but it’s a while since I’ve drove a truck through grantham so stand to be corrected

In answer to your question, I don’t think anyone who reads your posts on here would ever suggest you might be " missing a bridge "
Regards. John.
Well my truckers map is showing 15 9 ,I can’t even see a 16 ft bridge in grantham on it ( Philips ) ,but as you have the pics who am I too argue ,I’ll come that way home from work tomorrow and put a tape on it .

I see DDS go through all the time through Rushall Bridge.
The 14 is the side of arch tbf, I always go through centre or if in doubt up the Mellis, passed the Dilke and left at the Island by Peugeot
