Tut tut. When you’re rocking a double decker like that if you see a height marker you might as well stop as It’s probably gonna be too low.

If you are travelling through mainland Europe the bridge height limit is 4.0m except for Spain and France which are in general 4.2m, here in the UK the limit is 5.03m
They have bridges that high on motorways?

Drivers, im sorry but if you dont know your trl Hight ( But you should do ) and not sure of the Bridge Hight, simple…
Slow down start looking ahead and STOP before the Bridge get out of your cab and have a look, get someone to watch you through.
DONT just keep driving at it and hope for the best… NO i am not perfect but been driving HgV / Lgv since 1977. We as drivers get
blamed for enough on the roads without causing more problems for ourselves. I just think we have to much stuff to distract us now. Lets all have a good safe time out there, and think what were doing…
Have a nice day…I know there’s a height indicator in the cab but does anyone physically check the height when doing the walk around checks, I mean would and intend to… might get some funny looks but I wont be hitting anything low.
If i get a trailer i aint pulled before then the measurimg stick comes out and it gets measured up with axle lifted on unit (unless it load then add 4 inches to be safe). Dont rely on wot it says on front of trailer as it maybe wrong

You got that one right batman…I cut from the same cloth…If I don’t check it goes no where
Call it what you will, thats just a hire truck… just some wanna be knob jockey moving house or something crap like that…arc bridge…lmao… couldn’t have got it more wrong…
i am not surprised with all the bridge strikes these days they brought in auto matics and there all lost these days without a sat nav they need a sat nav indicator that will tell them to stop i figure as its the only way the brain dead can work these days
It’s time to resurrect the bridge strike thread.
Why would anyone even attempt this?
That bridge is 16 foot 3 inches, either he was over that, or as it looks like, he didn’t go through the middle.
Regards. John.

Bet he looked at that Foster’s sign and thought “mmmm”.
I guess your going to collect your p45 for doing this but what happens with the law side of it?. Do you lose your licence , fine , dd etc ?.
This works for me.
When I do my walk round in the morning I always note the height of the trailer and then physically write it on the defect sheet under the trailer ticksheet.
Tends to focus the mind, especially when I use different height trailers thru the day.

Do you not find it far simpler to merely adjust the in cab height display to suit?
The bridge might be signed at 16ft 3inches, but is that only at its highest point? How much breadth at that height though? Not familiar with that bridge, but with a high trailer I would not even attempt a narrow arch bridge with a few inches tolerance.
In common with other arched bridges, it is marked with “goalposts” to show the available width at the marked height. Also bear in mind that a bridge marked 16’ 3" should actually be at the very least 16’ 6", and could be close to 16’ 9". When marking the bridges, the authorities are supposed to round down to the next whole 3 inches, and then knock another 3 inches off for clearance.

Looking on Google Streetview, the chord markings show the 16 ft 3 in clearance is right in the middle, straddling both lanes, so he doesn’t seem to have moved over enough to get the clearance.

In that incident the driver hasn’t contravened the height restriction, but has driven into the arch of the bridge by not taking the correct line though it. The police could prosecute for a general driving offence like driving without due care, it would depend what mood they were in and how much disruption and damage he caused.

how do you know he didnt have to take avoiding action due to some muppet charging through the other way its not unknown at that location as some of the locals can be a bit bloody minded forcing you to get out of the way of thier new chelsea tractor as they head off to pick up cressida and benedict from the creche
It’s better to take it slowly and stop if anyone isn’t giving you room than have to swerve into the bridge.
