BRIDGE STRIKES.

Odd days:
Lots of comments on increased number of bridge strikes. Has anybody worked out if it has increased in proportion to the increase number of trucks on our roads UK and foreign motors or it has increased full stop ?

We’re a double deck outfit and I can tell you that the vast majority of our (considerable amount of) bridge strikes are foreign agency drivers.

there was a bridge strike mentioned on the travel today…racking my brains to remember where it was

More ‘human error’ :unamused:

0Lower Downs Road, Raynes Park Wimbledon.

Come on then, do you ever make any mistakes, or have a spot of human error ever now and then?

What else caused it then . It can only be assumed there was a human at the wheel . The van did not choose to rearrange itself by doing this all on its own .
The bridge is marked in both feet & metres , has a rather obvious yellow / black painted arch , highlighting its height and shape .
It must be the case that the one driving , has also ventured into back of van , standing up to load / unload . The van body alone looks to be 2 Mtrs tall , or thereabouts . The van is fitted with tail lift , which travels up & down more then 1 ft (. 0.3 m ) , so total height of vehicle is more than 2.3 Mtrs ,which is more than height of bridge.
Something had to give .
Lack of observation, & lack of awareness of his vehicle he was in. But , crucially , & most telling was a complete & total failure to relate size ofvehicle he was driving to the available aperture in the bridge .It was not the bridge that decided to travel over the van .
The van driver attempted to manoeuvre van under bridge .

Human Error .

A Christmas special for Moomooland that wasn’t in the papers AFAIK:

It’s one I personally did 2 years ago.

I offer no defence other than I had (and have since) gone under that particular bridge many times before with a similar outfit running the same height of 13’ 6" and that bridge is marked up 14’ 3". Tightest on the northside with the road dropping to the south (you can see the previous scuff marks on the plating on the underside of the arch). Yes TruckNet CSI, I wasn’t between the goalposts.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Rhythm Thief:
Have you ever noticed that they’ve put the chains immediately after the last place you could turn an artic around? :unamused:

Perfectly sensible place to put them - otherwise they would trash the cars on the top deck of every single passing car transporter or similar vehicle.

No surprise there

I don’t understand your logic. Surely that’s the case regardless of whether they position the height warning chains before or after a turning spot?

The “turning spot” on the Eastern approach is the roundabout where the A619 joins the A60 - If they put the chains before it they would clobber every double decker, car transporter etc driving between Worksop and Mansfield. The “turning spot” on the Western approach is again a roundabout - this time at the entrance to Laing’s Explore Industrial Park. If the chains had been placed before this roundabout, they would similarly clobber anything over 14’ 3" going in/out of there (although admittedly unlikely to include car transporters).

I was thinking of the enormous entrance to a farm, which, if I recall correctly (it’s been years since I went down that road), is on the left immediately before you go under the chains. After this driveway entrance, which is more than big enough to turn an artic around in, there’s nowhere at all to turn a truck around.

Looking at Google streetview, it’s all changed since I was last there. But I remember thinking “why didn’t they put the chains twenty feet further North?” when I first went past.

I don’t think 20 feet would have made any difference - the farm entrance is about 200 yards before old the position of the chains (on the Western approach - I think the chains on the Eastern approach have been at their current location ever since they were first put up) - It’s also on the right, not the left (and opposite another road - Steetley Lane - which would again lead to potential conflicts with e.g. double-decker buses legitimately using that road if the chains were placed before the farm).

I don’t see the problem with where the chains are located, if someone hits the chains they would have hit the bridge anyway, so if they suffer a bit of trauma trying to reverse back against peak time traffic to a suitable turning point, it might actually get through their thick skulls to take their job a bit more seriously.

We have had a few of these luton tail lifts on hire for the christmas period.
They are marked up in the cab stating “This vehicle is over 2.0 meters high” on a sticker where the interior mirror would be and a sticker on the drivers door, they all semm to be around 10 foot 3 inches. So the height is in both feet and metres for the hard of thinking…lol
Human error I’m afraid
