I know of one notorious railway bridge in Ely with warning lights, hanging bars, and all manner of advance warnings…it gets hit 2 or 3 times a year
That one is only 9ft high & plenty of warning given - Absolutely no excuse for hitting that one unless you are blind! - just shows how stupid some drivers are !!
Just noticed this thread. I don’t hold with bridges going on strike; I thought Thatcher had put a stop to all that. Bridges should be like the police and military and not allowed to go on strike. Mercifully, bridges are like lorry drivers and never manage all to go on strike at the same time. These bridges use the element of surprise as their main weapon, and jump out at you unexpectedly, like for example, when you are peeing in a bottle, or changing a cassette, or texting the missus. They just seem to know when to get you.
Seriously though: I never did hit a bridge when I was still driving, try as I might! Here’s a bridge in Spain that nearly caught me out…
I know they should read the signs, but why do they not hang a scaffold tube across the road before the bridge so they hit that not the bridge and hold up the trains etc.

Eureka, give that man a pint.
Simple and cheap as chips solution, why hasn’t this been done at every bridge under 16’ 6".
South of Worksop on the A619 there’s a set of hanging chains Blackwall style either side of the bridge, seeing as the govt seems to have a bottomless pit of our money to burn, it would make sound economic and safety sense to put a set of those up both sides of every bridge at risk in the country.

As luminous / reflective signs , , numerous height warnings etc , are no deterrent , what use would a scaffold tube be . If they are stupid enough to try a bridge 9 ft clearance the scaffold tube would more than likely just be dragged along taking people , cars etc with it , again all totally oblivious to the guy charged with holding the steering wheel .
Having said that , they are fitting some bridges with purpose built heavy beams before the bridge , to catch any heroes & save the bridge , along with any associated train delays .
Themoocher:
Wonder what the guy is saying on the phone oops.
I don’t understand how you can hit a bridge.
You know the height of the vehicle, trailer and bridge.
If you were that stupid and drove down the road or took a wrong turning with the warning signs low bridge.
Surely to god you would stop before hitting the bridge.
i don’t understand how you’re never heard of human error
Human error.
I don’t get how you can drive under a bridge and strike it.
It’s not human error it’s stupidity.
Surely you must look up and think god that’s tight.
If your not 100% then get ur arse out the cab and look.
dude, tell you what, why don’t you post up an example of a mistake you’ve made and i’ll dissect it and tell you how i don’t understand how you made the mistake. don’t go jibbing on me
