BRIDGE STRIKES.

A little snippet from page 3 ( grantham ) local rag ,this week
Harlaxton rd is at the top of the strike list having been hit 15 times this year at a compensation cost of £76,026 to network rail, four of those strikes were reported in the last 2 weeks alone, believed too be due too a increase in traffic while Springfield rd bridge is closed .
The same could be said for the bridge on barrow by road which has been hit 3 times since last Tuesday ,in total the bridge has been struck 12 times this year ,costing network rail £67,788
Headlines were bridge strikes in grantham have cost more than £566,000 this year ,figures this week show
If anyone knows how too post it up its a interesting read ,barrow by rd hit 3 times since last Tuesday ,one about more bridge hits on harlaxton rd due to Springfield rd bridge makes no sense to me as it’s lower than harlaxton rd bridge so if there suggesting they would of gone down Springfield rd if it was open and not harlaxton rd ,I think all that would have happened would of been a even bigger bang .

guaranteedit ends up on its knees,or the straps go round the handles of the container…then through the back of the cab once they snap…any takers??

Depends if the box is full weight and how much is wedged under the bridge. If it’s empty or light and it’s not too far wedged under then the legs should easily survive a bit of dragging without bending. Not sure that the straps will hold up though. If it’s wedged under the bridge then it will need jerking to free it as the unit wheels will spin otherwise (as mentioned) but I can see the staps snapping if he jerks it and - like you say - the straps will go through the back of the cab. The trailer appears to be dropped high at the front unless it’s being propped up by the bridge and the airbags appear to still be inflated. I’d be trying lowering the suspension first, see if that freed it, then if not, pull pin, drive forward a few feet, reverse back and give the pin a fairly hard slam and see if I could push the trailer out that way. That’s more likely to result in success than trying to jerk it out from behind with a strap imho.

Is that a HC box? Been a while since I did them but looks like a standard dry van to me. Bridge appears to say 14’9 so a std dry van and even a HC should’ve gone under that easily at normal ride height. Typically a std box will run about 13’6 and a HC around 14’6.

Todays whoopsie. Cabin meets 15’6 bridge in Northwich

If that container is empty that will drag out nae bother at all, shunt button and park break off. If it’s full then I reckon the legs couldn’t take it if the wagon could even manage to pull it.

Wish you knew the outcome to these things

What a Donk !!

I’m no expert having never hit a bridge but that looks as if he could lower the unit suspension and reverse out carefully with no damage done.

This made me chuckle on reading the Rugeley report:
“Investigations have found that the shipping container at the back of the lorry got stuck under the bridge in the crash.”
Who’d have though it?

The Twonk has probably twisted the chassis on the unit !!

the unit suspension looks lowered, look at the wheel arch and the spray flap

Most of us on here bang on about how professional we are and should be paid more for our skills etc, so surely it can’t be that difficult to ensure that we never strike a bridge. All trailers have (or should have)their heights marked up and bridges under a certain height are marked up so what is the problem?

it could be the drivers dont understand english ? or new drivers who need a sat nav so there lost without one and just dont know how to focus on sign posts anymore like we had to ?

it really does beggar belief when i hear or see bridge strikes as there is no defense for a driver. i tend to think drivers follow sat navs anywhere these days even if it means going up duel carrageways the wrong way lol

are you perfect? have you ever made a mistake?

You should be asking what a duel carrageway is - I think he may mean ‘dual carriageway’, but hey, he never makes mistakes, he’s perfect

I sir, challenge you to a duel… NO wait, I mean a dual… Oh bugger, can’t decide if I’m gun slinging or overtaking now :open_mouth:

14’3 by the looks of it.
Same bridge but an older image - before the LOW BRIDGE markings were put up, and it was only a triangle sign back then, obviously been changed to a circle, but you can see the ‘painters and decorators’ in the background to show it’s the same bridge.
