Bridge strikes

Evil8Beezle:
I keep looking at this and wondering what the bloody hell was the driver thinking?
To me this is worse than hitting a low bride, as at least that can be put down to being absent minded…
But with this, judging from the picture, I just don’t know where to start! :open_mouth:

Cheers pal.

It’s a wider road than I imagined from the 1 view we had…
And that arch behind him doesn’t look like it belongs on an A road! :open_mouth:

I can only assume he swerved to avoid a collision…

CSI Face-ache say the driver was arrested oso dangerous driving. Either tanked it over or seriously misjudged the size of the on-coming ‘large vehicle’, velocity unknown, which may or may not have been a bin wagon. Either way, the social media masses have decided that the case is closed and he’s to be shot at dawn Monday.

So they’ve really come down on him like a ton of bricks?

(I’ll stop now  )

I have money on it that he was trying to go under it

Height sticks will get bent out of shape, run over and flattened or just plain lost…

Posting the height on the front of the trailer, inside the cab and on the bridge clearly is insufficient to stop this from happening day after day.

theres always the option of a extending tape measure costing £1 from the pound shop…no brainer.

That bridge is a tad narrow, and before crossing you need to sort it out first with oncoming traffic.

Looks a bit like a section of road I went down in ■■■■■■■ recently. B5301 out of Aspatria.

So you’re happy to clamber up onto a 16 foot double deck trailer and dangle a tape measure over the side?

That’s why they have height STICKS.

I’ve thought about getting a laser measure. Are they good for measuring?

Only if you want to measure lasers.

No. They require something to bounce off, think of it like shooting a bullet, you’d need that bullet to bounce off and return to you, if you shot your bullet at the top of a trailer it would just skip off skywards. I don’t think you’d be able to get a return.

Although they would be ideally suited to measuring the clearance under a bridge before attempting to drive under it.

 quality!

Why do you need to ’ clamber ’ all over a DD to measure it? Take a half decent and inexpensive tape measure and measure from the ground to your catwalk. Then simply measure from your catwalk to the top of your trailer.

This will only work though if folk are capable of simple addition.

pallet work DD trailers have the front of the trailer lower than the end so it won’t work

I’ve pulled trailers where the metric and imperial measurements on the headboard are miles out.

And why is it that at our place, where we all use identical kit, and pull the same trailers, that you some height indicators are set as low as 13’8" yet some are set at 14’4"?

Our trailers are all marked with the box height. You measure from the bottom front edge of the trailer to the road when you’re coupled up and add the two together. We have to record our travelling height on our daily defect sheet(s).
