Bridge strikes

This thread was started due to a driver hitting a bridge that had “low bridge” on it and yellow/black markings.
Am I the only one who thinks its pointless trying to come up with a good system to warn of low bridges when at the moment you have drivers who cant see “low bridge” painted in great big 6 foot letters PLUS yellow and black markers?
If someone cant see these, they arent going to see a chain stretched across the road either

And you can bet your b******s that they wouldn’t hear it either with the cd/bluetooth/flash drive/tv/video/earphones turned up full blast while they’re texting.

Either that or they would disconnect the buzzer because it annoyed them when it met low hanging trees!

Because they’ve seen the ‘bridge’ but they’ve totally forgotten all about the height of the ‘truck’. :bulb:  In which case the idea of hanging heavy chains from a gantry isn’t to remind them that there is a bridge in plain sight ahead of them. It’s to create the situation of the driver hearing, possibly even feeling,a massive loud ‘BANG’ against the trailer/truck body then saying wtf was that and hopefully anchoring up before the even bigger bang that would/will happen if they keep going.Having said the the Blackwall obviously takes that idea of ‘massive BANG’ to a new level. :open_mouth:

Hmmmmm maybe.
But I cant help feeling that if a great big sign is being missed then the driver isnt paying attention so having a chain would be a bit like chucking a deckchair off the titanic

If the chain system really worked I think we would see it implemented at all frequently hit bridges
Instead a few places have an electronic system which clearly costs a lot more money…

Er - the chains across the road don’t rely on a buzzer in the cab - they operate their own audible/palpable alarm system by clattering against the vehicle…

I think the word is more ‘smashing’ against the vehicle assuming they are heavy enough. :smiling_imp:  Especially in the case of the Blackwall example in that case hitting the tunnel would probably do less damage to the wagon.

Which leaves the question of why go for bleedin great big hanging heavy steel beams at the Blackwall instead of an electronic system. :bulb:

I meant for the laser system being banded about as an alternative to the chain system.

Knowing officials they will hang those chains 1 or 2 inches lower than the actual bridge, just to make sure…
You would love living next to a bridge where they hang those chains. :sunglasses:

I reckon it needs to be a punishment thing. Lose your job or lose your licence for 3 months. Or maybe £1000 fine.

Surely if you set off on your journey with the mindset of " whatever I do, DO NOT hit a bridge " (which I do and I am sure plenty others do), the instances would decrease.

Currently my understanding based on drivers comments over the last 3 years I have been driving seems to be " don’t worry about it ".

Why? Surely if the bridge height is overstated it’s not a problem?

:open_mouth:

Overstated logically means the sign says the bridge is higher than it actually is.IE the bridge is lower than the stated height.

you must get a hell of a freight when it happens; just sitting there minding your own business then all of a sudden your false teeth pop out and crack the windscreen

Some bridges in the North Midlands have chains on their approach (the railway bridge between Retford and Clarborough is just one example and I think the one between Barlborough and Worksop is another) and I can’t remember those bridges getting struck by vehicles. Expensive yes, but cheaper that rebuilding a bridge I would think and being railway bridges I wonder who coughed up the cash for chains, the rail network or the council?

Pete.

Have we now gone fully metric then? I’m seeing more trailers with heights marked up in only metric. (most signs and bridges where marked are mainly imperial although some have both)?
