“I don’t know whether they are inexperienced drivers and they think ‘I will try and have a go’.”
so does she really think people who are having ago, will have ago without slowing down?
That was me Stevieboy
It’s called trying very hard to give a quote to a reporter that doesn’t slate lorry drivers about a situation that was clearly the fault of the driver in question.
He wasn’t going slowly to see if he could make it, was he?
He didn’t check his Bridge Bashers Bible did he?
What defence would you have given?
The bridge must have dropped a bit with all the rain we’ve had?
Pat
The train that was crossing the bridge at that precise moment must have been overweight
Dakota:
How does a truck come to fall over after hitting a bridge?
Whenever I’ve seen an over height truck go under something too low it’s managed to get a bit of the way in damaging the top. What happened here, did the truck hit the bridge, reverse out then fall over?
The trailer hits it at an angle and the other side of the trailer wants to keep going along with the load which shifts to the side of the trailer which is carrying most momentum and then rolls over.
That’s what I think anyway.

I think you done well even trying to stick up for him
There was an interesting bridge thread on here just last week if you want a good read.

hello!

fair enough, not an easy thing to do. but do you think you achieved what you set out to achieve? because if i’m being honest, i don’t think you did.
having ago to see if’ll fit at full chat don’t make em sound too bright to me.
bloodoodle:

no, which would lead me to believe he wasn’t trying to see if he could make it
bloodoodle:
He didn’t check his Bridge Bashers Bible did he?
who knows?
bloodoodle:

lapse in concentration / human error / mistake / sat waiting for a unit on POA for a few hours at the beginning of his shift

whilst unlikely, i’m sure that’s happened somewhere at sometime
How about pulling the licence off them, to give other chancers something to think about
Hopefully they will be charged with dangerous driving, If not why not
Have a think about the consequences apart from the fact it may have landed on someone it usually ends up in disruption & delays to thousands of people on the trains while the bridge is given the all clear.
so you’ve never made a mistake then?
i never said they shouldn’t get into trouble for it.
your 1st sentence implies these people are unsure if their vehicle will fit under, but have ago anyway, do you not think anyone who’s having ago would not slow down before they offer it up?
i don’t believe there are many people, if any that would have ago without slowing down.
unless a conscious decision has been made then the consequences of a mistake i’d say have little to do with making the mistake or not, which is why hundreds of people die everyday from there own mistakes
How often do you see a sign saying “low bridge in 1/4 mile” and it’s actually off the road?
If the bridge didn’t have a sign ON it, which it doesn’t appear to have, then it’s easy to think that the bridge is 16’6 high, and you wouldn’t slow down.
A small defence is that the first sign for the bridge is only 150yrds from it. Thats travelling on the A6 from Cromford traffic lights. And that is on the opersite side to which he was travelling.
Due to the angle of the bridge, it doesn’t have a sign on the bridge itself, but does have 1 on the pavement on the left and 1 on the central support.
There isn’t even a warning at the A610 junction, only for the one on the A610.
Saw a double-deck trailer parked at the side of the road by the bridge on the A5 at Hinckley this evening. He hadn’t hit the bridge as far as I could tell but had driven past several warning signs before finding himself stuck with nowhere to turn around. Oops!

He was going north. Went up to it and started reversing back. Ceva i think? i was going south and was held up whilst he mucked about then coppers turned up and drove him into BP garage. Hope they gave him a ticket lol…

That bridge is on a bend, and crosses the road at a shallow angle. You can see from the photo that the front part of the vehicle is actually under the bridge. The left front corner of the trailer hit the bridge, and due to the angle of the impact it pushed the top of the trailer to the right, resulting in the whole outfit toppling onto its side.
the bridge on the a20 near lenham turns overhight trucks over and that one is on a strait bit or road
How about this one then? Its on the A461 Lichfield Road coming out of Walsall one of the signs is marked 14ft the other is marked 4.3m. The first time i saw a City Link 16ft double decker heading for it i thought no way as all the approach signs up the road say the bridge is 14ft but on closer inspection when you get there you see a 4.3 m sign on the bridge itself. Wonder who tried it with a 16ft double decker first after passing all the 14ft warning signs up the road
diggertony:
i dont get it. 4.3m is 14 ft near enough. you woundnt with a doubledeck anyway
I use this road regularly on nights and most nights i see City Link and Palletline 16 foot double deckers negotiate this bridge. Comments from any double-decker drivers who use this route would be very welcome.
