Hi, recently started driving hgv class 2. Been working delivering foodstuffs around the northeast and Scotland generally 4am starts.
I have had problems feeling fatigued in the mornings even though I have slept well. Once I have stopped for a 15 min break I am fine so decided its a food thing rather than tiredness.
I was having weetabix for breakfast and taking a packet of hob nobs to help keep active, but as i knew I had a long run today I had some bacon and bean buttys before i left the house and was fine biscuits not needed. So seems to confirm it’s a diet thing.
Any others find they need to eat certain foods to start the day off.
Was thinking it may be the protein but plenty of protein in the milk on my weetabix. So thinking there is something else im missing.
Was only getting this issue on long runs, no problems with local drops.

Maybe it’s just me, but if I eat anything within about 6 or 7 hours of waking up, I feel washed out and hungry for the rest of the day. It’s as if I need to “earn” the food. When I do eat after that time, I really appreciate it though and feel fine afterwards.
I dont eat first thing just a tea or coffee.Wait about 3-4 hours thats when i eat and im fine. But i dont have a sweet tooth so dont snack on biscuits and sweets.

Yeah, I couldn’t survive without a cuppa! Strangely though, after years of drinking buckets of coffee every day, about a month ago it started making me feel queasy. Just stopped drinking it one day and I don’t miss it at all. Have cut down on tea too as it was having the same effect, but I don’t think I could wake up without one!
Coffee, banana and a pot of yoghurt for breakfast if really early start, end up having some kind of breakfast around 10am. Always used to have flapjacks to hand though for snacks.
Also never ate big meals whilst working, more of a snacker as I used to hit a wall a few hours after any big meals.
Plenty of water too, never under estimate how lack of hydration can cause fatigue, it’s not just sleep pattern or food intake…

Just make sure you’re standing up when you eat it!

Yes, I find I’m quite reliant on fast acting carbs like a sandwhich. If you’re having some difficulties go to the quacks and talk to a nutritionist.
In the UK “nutritionist” is meanigless.
It’s a qualified dietition you’d need to see, via your doctor.
May seem pedantic but there’s enough people, with meaningless titles, after a quick buck offering bad advice.
Doubt me?
Look up “Bad Science” by Ben Goldacre. About Doctorates, nutritionist, TV personalities, …well. I won’t spoil his story.
for years ive always started off with a traditional foxes breakfast, consisting of a ■■■■ and a look round about me,
check the diesel, back doors and the pin, then offski asap.
after 2 or 3 hours then i might want to shove something in.
At 4am, I guess roads there are quieter than normal at that hour, drone of engine on truck can have an effect, try radio2 or Northsound to keep your mind busy, takes a wee while to adjust to an early morning run, give it time! “but yer Weetabix is the way to go.”

No it isn’t. It is the fact that the natural body clock, the Circadian Rhythm, is programmed to have you in your deepest sleep at 4am and you’re trying to fight against it. If you knew just how much it screws up your health and is shortening your life I think it’d shock you.
The stupid times we’re out on the road seriously knacker your health. Truck driving is another job that can’t be automated out fast enough.
It is not the early hours that mess you up, it is the constant changing. I go to bed at 8:00pm most days and up at 4:00am and feel really good. A real early start means I only get up an hour or so early do has no adverse effects. Can’t have a social life in the evenings but enjoy the afternoons at weekends
I’d leave the biscuits alone, although the carbs in them will give you the energy, the sugar content will be high and in the long term you’ll pile on the weight. Try eating fruit instead
