Just went for interview, and guy was amazed that I didn’t have sat - nav.Understand its in their interest and mine to have such a device, but where does he come of from thinking I should bear the full cost of such a device.I don’t have to put fuel in the tank if I hit restrictions, and go 10 miles to turn around.Ain’t I paid out enough to get this poxey licence
I really don`t see a problem here. With VERY few exceptions, we buy our own. Much greater conflicts and frustrations await you, believe me!
if you expect any trades person to have their own equipment why should you not have yours, what is the difference between your dentist and his drill or the washing machine man with his box of tricks, you profess to be able to get your vehicle from a to b as a job so the tools to do it should be purchased by you, if you don’t want to shell out for a sat nav then buy a map at tescos for a couple of quid, but don’t expect your boss to fund your life.
Have you not got a truck road map ? I use mine for all my route planning .
I wouldn’t buy a sav nav personally, they can be unreliable and what if there is no signal !
You’ll go far, that’s the spirit we need more of and the more the better, the more bosses find attitudes like that sitting across the desk from them the safer the rest of our jobs become.
Driver shortage? it would appear so…
Same with a mobile phone, if boss wants me to have one then he pays not me

Yeh quite right he should, along with a sandwich box and bog paper and if he’s a good boss he will use it personally to wipe your arse also.
Thing is mate here’s a revelation for you the job CAN be done without a sat nav
…yeh seriously
,
Granted it is easier with a one, I use a one myself I never used to after saying that , but they are optional if you think you need one you buy one.

I agree, or you use your own and claim back (at premium rates) for any work related calls, if he won’t buy one, or won’t re.imburse you for calls, don’t use it and more important don’t answer it to him while in the truck, or better still don’t give him your mobile no.
Agreed, if the boss wants you to have a satnav, he should provide you with one. likewise a mobile if they want to keep in touch with you. Iv never had a satnav in 36yrs driving, if i can do the job without one, why should i buy one ?

When was the last time you checked out satnav, they are no way unreliable and the only time I don’t get a signal is in tunnels such as Dartford or the Blackwall,I think they are a must for all drivers alongside a good map and pure drivers instinct.Thank you.

I disagree. I’ve had mine lose signal on Hammersmith Broadway, panicked and ended up going to Kingston via Wimbledon. Same again in the city centre of Birmingham with similar results.
This is a funny old question. If your prospective employer was insisting you have a sat nav, then yes he should bloody well supply it.
If however you asked a question something along the lines of, “so how do I find my way around? You giving me a sat nav or a map?” Then I agree with Juddian, carry on, because your just driving up my potential demand for my skills
It doesn’t matter how you get around, but it does need to be efficient and independent. If you cant manage these two simple caveats to route finding then your in for a rough ride in your chosen career.
That being said, my employer provides an HGV sat nav for each truck (only 5), my last employer provided a street atlas for our delivery radius (only 10 miles) but if they didn’t supply them, I have a Truckers Atlas, a Snooper, and sat nav on my phone, so it wouldn’t be a problem.

id say you were an ideal candidate for agency work with that mindset…get your own flashing earpiecs, and put a pebble in 1 sock in the morning when your getting dressed, and there you go…absolute 1st class limper materiel…do a bit of swatting on such subjects as the zeebrugge ferry, flipflops, the embassy seige and life around Hereford.and you will have a captive audience in every rdc you visit,or if you aspire to be the king of the hill, get a shift doing a trailer swap at night, …beauford t justice was right…what is the world coming to…if it wasn’t true,it would be amusing…

Yes, absolutely right and i should have made the distinction too.
Yeh ok, now it’s my turn to back pedal
If it’s insistence from the co, that throws a different light on it and makes it no longer optional, so yeh, in that case the co. provides.
Note ; you should still buy your own bog roll though
bog roll is so last century, even if supplied and operated (ooer missus) by the good boss
this is all the modern man needs, strap one to the catwalk…
hahahahahahahahahaha
Can the mods please put a limpers section on here so I don’t get sucked in to pointless drivel.
I am so glad I don’t do RDC’s as the mortality rate would plummet.
Haha. I thought it was just cyclists that you like battering Honked?
Good to see that you have no time for the ex SAS RDC heroes too!
My boss some years ago said to me I was trying to phone you last night but your phone was off
I replied yeah that’s right he said he needed to get in touch with me about my next day’s instructions
I replied I’d spoke to the traffic office before I booked off and was giving my plans
He said I should keep the cab phone on all the time
I responded are you paying me all night then
He replied no so I said once I’ve pulled my card out and booked off that time belongs to me so the cab phone gets turned off too
and it gets switched back on when I start the following day
This resulted that any change of plans or instructions were given when booked off
I wouldn’t have expected my boss to supply maps
We did a lot of seasonal multi drops leading up to Christmas for Raleigh bikes which involved being out all week I had a bag full of A to Z maps which were a god send
The best way is simple just ask another driver where a drop or delivery is there’s no shame in it
I’ve been driving class 1s for 30 years and i still ask other drivers on the odd occasion for info
