Big cabs/high cabs?

Am i alone in disliking these poxy motors :imp: if your drivers are on nights out ,surely he deserves a Daf xf- not a ‘high’ cab CF :smiling_imp: or even worse a ‘hacksaw’ instead of an Actros…FM gobstopper! Aaaaaargh :imp: :imp: :smiling_imp:

Why?

If you can give me one GOOD reason why a driver NEEDS (as opposed to wants) the biggest cab a manufacturer offers I will gladly agree with you, but the simple fact is that the Volvo FM, Daf CF, Axor etc are perfectly good motors and do the job just as well as any other!

A MegaTrotterGlobeSpaceXXL is always nice to have, but never NEEDED! If the driver don’t like it, he can always move on!

Things have changed since the 70’s and 80’s but the highest paid drivers were always the car transporter men along with tanker drivers. Both used small cabs either to save weight or get an extra car on the cake stand.

I have done many many weeks away in a standard sleeper cab and been well rewarded for it. I have driven mega hohemax cabs for peanuts too

given the choice of a DAF CF Skycab or an XF space cab, i would take the CF Skycab every time, for the simple reason, there is more headroom in the Skycab than an XF Space cab

says him who drives the country’s biggest day cab

Hiya in the 80,s i had a bedford km 4 wheeler. I had 3 nights out each week.i made it possible to sleep on the parcel shelf(iam 5ft 9)
but can i say i needed to take my wallet out of my pocket first. small cab with a huge pay line much better than a very big cab been
paid peanuts. later i had a 2100 daf top sleeper it did,nt seem as snug at first but i did get use to it and there was room for my wallet.

I have for the last year driven an XF and for the 18 months or so before that I had an FM Globetrotter, doing 2 or 3 nights out a week over the water. Both vehicles were equally suitable for the job, the Volvo was a better drive because of the i-shift but both cabs were fine for living and working in and the FM although a smaller cab does have more locker storage space than the XF. To me the money is a bigger issue than the size of the cab

Im not going to bore you with what it was like 40yrs ,ago but in my time cab wise ive had makeshifts[coffins]standard cabs[sed atkis]lovely superspacer]daf 3300,one of the best i had imho. Finally i had a daf85 high cab and a daf95 s/space.I managed ok with them all as have thousands of drivers along with me.It was great to finally get a space cab, when i had to move off the daf 3300 to the daf 85 i was gutted but after adapting to it i was happy for a few yrs before getting the daff 95s/space.Sorry to say this but methinks some drivers expect too much or are a trifle spoilt.
regards dave.

I suppose i have the opposite problem i have a 105xf space cab i have had one night out in the last 3 weeks and i some respects they are to big for our job
I used to have a week away in the old r cab scania good money little cab didnt care money is money and im a greedy bugger
as shuttlespanker said i would have a CF Spacecab i had a Foden Alpha Spacecab so much space it was brilliant

Why, I’d rather get more money for less cab. Though I’m in a topliner now, I drove Renualts for over 15 years, and never a magnum. I would say that tramping in a G 290 requires being organised and tidy(and if you knew me you’d know how bizare that sounds), but its not a problem. And i would still be happy to have a Premium back, for the right finacial inducement, especialy if the badge on the door of the BC Transport one that flew past the other day wasnt a trick of the light, 550dxi :open_mouth: I’d want one of them

I’ll take the money please,im currently driving a Volvo Fm with the standard cab,it does fine for me as i’ve had 3 nights out in the last 5 years  but i’ve earnt more money on this job than I ever did before

Im with you, while i sometimes think the little FM globetrotters and P cab scania highline can look quite smart, if your buying a big cab then buy the big cab.

Cos firms can all afford the extra expense at the moment.

If firms cant afford the big cab then buy the small one. Drivers will decide if they want to spend all week in a shoe box, or be comfortable while away from home.

Is Boris working? :stuck_out_tongue:

And I thought I was a right moaner complaining because we didn’t have n/s electric mirror adjustment on our CF day cabs. :unamused:

Our FL7 day cabs haven’t got electric windows or any kind of remote mirror adjustment. An annoyance as this week I seem to keep being given trucks that have been driven by the short bloke who lies down to drive, you all know the type, and end up spending ten minutes just adjusting the seat and keep getting out to do the mirrors.

After passing class 1 I got a job driving 1 year old Daf XF and was working for penny’s, all week away from home, now I driver any old banger and get paid more, also I’m home every night you will always find the more older truck they have the more pay you get, or at least what I find out, is nice to have nice bic cab but to me money all the way

Another point, in the current Arctic conditions a smaller cab is quicker to warm up than a big cab - saves me having to scrape the frost off the top of my head in a morning.
