Thanks for the gen on the reg no. Larry,I always thought it was a Shropshire no. which is where they came from, it’s mate I bought with it was PAW 480M (1974),OHA 301M was 1973 reg.I paid £4250 for the '74 and £3750 for the '73 I got them in early '76 IIRC.I know they weren’t in the Scania/Volvo/Atki class but they were two nice units,at the right price, and they gave us excellent service during the time we ran them.Cheers Dennis.
A mid 70’s shot in the old yard in Milnthorpe with both the Big J’s OHA301M and PAW480M,100% reliable fleet motors.
Dennis based on the wide knowledge you have of the transport industry and if still in business today what make or makes of vehicles would you purchase and run ? ,[ please remember there are many more manufacturers other than Scania ] .
Not according to Bewick there aren’t.
and I agree with him and after scania Volvo regards rowly

As I am well out of touch with the industry now although I have heard the odd negative report about Scania in later years I would now choose Mercedes as the backbone of the fleet with maybe a few Renaults in the mix,but don’t ask about trailers as from what I’ve seen they are all ■■■■■ nowadays.Cheers Dennis.
Here is a Guy for you Dennis with a 240 Gardner in it full rear end view

Not a chance Frank The shot you have here is a Seddon 32/4 with the 8LXB 200bhp engine, not many were built by Seddon but I recall Malc Woodhouse buying and running a secondhand one,but they were a white elephant, they were niether one thing or the other mate.Cheers Dennis.

How many of this particular spec of Seddons would SOM have run “shugg” ? Legend has it that they had 40 Big J’s with the 8LXB engine so theres no telling how many of these Seddons they might have run Stand by,the rumour mill will probably go into overdrive now

Bewick.
As far as I can remember SOM ran fairly large amounts of the Seddons + even larger numbers of ERF
s fitted with the 8 cyl Gardners , as for Guy Big Js with this particular engine I am pretty certain the answer must be a big NO !!! , in conclusion they did run huge amounts of Big J s fitted with various ■■■■■■■ engines .
A weekend shot down in the old yard in Milnthorpe, the car was a new 2:1D Opel Rekord diesel I bought which came from Ireland via a dealer pal,you couldn’t buy the diesel version in the UK at that time, you should have seen the crowd that gathered round it at Bradys garage on Duke St. in Barrow when I took it for it’s first service, young John Brady (well he was young then in '76 ) was nearly frothing at the mouth,he couldn’t get over the “power bulge” on the bonnet !

Shot yerself in the foot that time, 680
Big J/ 240s had horizontal air filters, if I’m not mistaken (which I usually am!).

Sammy Williams were up to the same tricks with loads of timber ROF,when you weighed off at the delivery the load was often anything up to 27 tons (at 32 ton gvw) they just fobbed you of with “oh its down to cube measurement not weight”.So we soon stopped loading the odd motor off them, they’ed have got us locked up if we’d got a pull.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ Bewick.
Hi ,Mr Bewick , I remember loading out of Tilbury shed 20 something a load of Keroin timber they take all thats left we will pay a cap load ,double decked pluss 6 pks on the third layer i thought she looks well down on the back axle ,So off to the weigh bridge told it closed at 5 o clock it was 10 to six come back in morning , So off up to B/Ham ran out of time at south mimms but new i was well over weight so an early dart before the weights and measures were up must have had about 26 ton pluss on , When i got back got in touch with the firm and was told there was only 23 tons on the manafest after lots of rowing they agreed to pay 15 ton end of story i was very wary every time i loaded from Tilbury or other docks after ,Once bitten just a bit of usless info ,Cheers Barry

An Opel Rekord 2.1 diesel…I haven’t seen one of those for years. You were ahead of your time in 1976 Dennis…diesel cars were very rare in the UK at that stage. ‘Power Bulge’ was a little optimistic?
