Hi Dai,long story,when I left school in 1963 I started work at Croppers of Burneside and was there about 3 years,on shifts,as a trainee papermaker which I thoroughly enjoyed,great firm probably the finest papermakers in the UK.I left after being badly injured on one of the papermaking machines.I was out of commision for a few months.Then I started at Brady’s on the Octopus and trailer.When I left Bradys to start on my own I did some of my first loads out of Croppers,but they ran a fleet of their own and you only were given the “scraps” so that was no good to me :frowning: So I moved on to Libbys at Milnthorpe and then to Henry Cooke,another local Mill.Over the years we delivered quite a lot of woodpulp into Croppers and in the early '90’s we did a lot of storage for them also but no transport.In the late '70’s I did come very close to buying their fleet and taking over all their transport but sadly,for Croppers own “political” reasons it never happened,but you win some and miss some and we never took any harm as we hauled paper for mills a lot larger than Croppers,but I always had a “soft spot” for them as they were,and still are,great paper makers. :frowning: Cheers Dennis.

I don’t have a lot of Volvo shots in the archive but I think this is a decent one of a couple of the F10’s we ran.

I have a similar story, yours gave me a real chuckle.

These old Beavers carted 15t of sugar plus (3 the tons of bins), it was a milk run and easily handled by 200hp.
Dad decided we’d try a faster diff so the driver could use direct when loaded and then 6th when idling along empty.
They already had the 60mph reduction hub diff but somehow dad found a “bus” ratio from Leyland in the UK and imported a crown wheel/pinion.
The pinion was almost a large as the crownwheel, so large that it couldn’t be fitted into the pinion carrier (and then fit the carrier), the pinion had to go in from the rear.
Anyway we struggled with this heavy bloody thing one weekend and finally had her ready to go Sunday night.
It was perfect, plenty of Hp and she idled along very quickly, hard to tell accurately as the speedo pinion was still reading for the old diff ratio.
We did some maths and decided 1500 in new 6th was about the same as 1800 in old 6th, and instructed the driver accordingly.
Anyone who has driver 680’s knows their happy spot is 1400 or 1900 where they really sing.
Next day we followed the truck pulling up some hills, she seemed to handle it fine then once on the flat off she went. Couldn’t catch her, 75mph steady and as sweet as you like.
Had to do some extremely fast driving to overtake and stop the truck, then found that the driver had forgotten all instructions and was driving her the same as normal, 1900 in 6th.
Big night that night swapping the old 60mph diff back.

Interior shot of our Garage down in Milnthorpe village,a selection of motors, MK1 and MK2 Atkys,a couple of Seddons a Volvo and,wait for it,a brand new GUY ! :open_mouth: This was a great workshop,regular shape,but in the wrong place.The site is now a Doctors surgery,a Chemists shop and a block of flats.

Park that f88 up in the back of the garage driver,you’ll be drivin a brand new guy on Monday morning,err thanks boss.

I’m currently preparing to move house to the Leatherhead area. I’ve come to the conclusion that I’d probably be better off near those with similar sized brains.

I’ve had a word in the “Leatherhead Leper’s” “shell like” and he’s going to talk to the Council in the morning and get them to knock the boarding off the windows of an empty “drum” and remove the Cortina shell and the old fridge from the front garden,he’s also got an “in” with “War on Want” and they’ll pop a bit of furniture round.He also said he can get you a bit of “running money” from the “Social” prior to you submitting a full and comprehensive claim :wink: he said ,“any probs” just give him a bell at the “Hostel” ( Thats secure accomodation to you and me :laughing: )Cheers Dennis.

Still sticking with all things Volvo,a shot of a brace of FL10’s standing in the depot at Milnthorpe,the 4x2 on the left driven by a long time Bewick driver Duncan McMinn and the 6x2 “pusher” on the right by an equally long serving Bewick driver Roy “Bull” Davies R.I.P…Two great drivers that could tackle anything and sheet and rope to the highest standard,they don’t produce drivers of that calibre anymore,sad to say.

I’m giving your offer some serious thought, Dennis, the only problem is that I need a visa to move South of Birmingham. As you know, I was sent oop North as a missionary and failed so badly that I had all my documents rescinded, as a result of which I don’t think I would be allowed to resettle down in England. During the recent sunny weather I’ve been attempting to get a bit of a tint to my skin in the hopes of getting a council house darn Sarf but unfortunately in Macclesfield any trace of a tan soon gets replaced by rust.

That load is sheeted and roped to the max the driver /shunter gets 11 out of 10 from me Dennis great looking

From around 78/9 all our motors carried the names of Standardbred racehorses this FL10 had the fleet name “Cover Up” which was the name of an imported American stallion which was the sire of the best two horses we ever owned,Dalestar and Dalechief,they each won the premier 3 y.o.race of their respective years 1987 and 1990.We used both the names of American and British pacers on the fleet and your not the first by any means David to ask the same question,we used to get regular letters from all over asking what some of the “peculiar” names meant :wink: but the very last two but one of the motors I bought prior to joining the WRM Group I named “Thomas Bewick” and “Evening Star” with the final unit being bought by me but delivered after WRM took over so it was “nameless” Cheers Dennis.

Hi, Thanks for starting this thread, I have spent a good few hours reading this & really enjoyed it :slight_smile: I used to drive a N registered FL10 - very reliable as I remember but seemed to tip things off the bunk as you drove along :neutral_face:

The same Volvo leaving the depot one Sunday lunchtime to head south with a load of Libby juice from the factory next door to our depot.

Great pics, iff I may ,how long did it take the shunter to sheet average load, ie as this one and high loads, what a credit., cheers

Well inside the hour,they were “ace” at their craft at Bewick Transport,but so were many other shunters at other loading points up and down the UK and none of them ever got the full accolade due to them,it was always the drivers up and down the road that got the compliments,even though they hadn’t touched the sheets and ropes on the trailer they were coupled to :blush:IMHO the Shunters were the unsung heros of a decent haulage firm,worth their weight in gold,period. :wink: Cheers Bewick.

The worst paper load I have seen to sheet were Thames Board Workington
Some looked like a double hump camel and Robson fra Carlisle did a bloody
