Not bad from a 250cc racing motorcycle :grimacing:

The Merc was probably empty though and the F12 was fully freighted if the 1632 went uphills anything like a 1628 or a 2534. :open_mouth:

Got to disagree with you there Carryfast…A 1632 V10 Merc set up correctly was a flying machine…I saw a brand new F12 fail to pull a 60 tonne low loader out of a quarry where a well worn 1632 walked out independently…also if you got the injector pump tweaked in your Merc and had a 13 speed Fuller 'box(Standard issue in France) not even the mighty 141 could hold you…the V10 had no problem doing 1,500,000kms between overhauls…whereas the early F12s needed new pistons and liners after 500,000/600,000kms…1632 Mercs put the most money into my bank compared to any truck…before or since…and yes…they sounded great on full song…they had a unique warble all to themselves…

They did’nt sound bad but they were ineffecient great lumps considering their size and outputs  and ironically that was one of their strengths in taking the compromise between stress and fuel consumption etc to the point where their reliability outweighed their poor efficiency and fuel and consumption issues  .

But my comments were directed more towards the V8 and the later V6 motors more than the old V10 but it just shows how inefficient and understressed those motors were considering that it took that big V10 motor to stand a chance against other wagons with smaller more fuel efficient engines although they did prove the point that I’ve often made that fuel efficiency is’nt everything as there’s no point in saving a few bob on fuel and then having to spend more than the money saved in maintenance costs. :bulb:

Hiya …after looking at the honda bikes(yes i was in the IOM in 66…67…68…69…73 …76)i would like to know what
would have happend if the Japanese had have got hold of a gardner engine and made some refinements on the percy
special. after all the Japanese only refined british bikes and made them supreme

:open_mouth: A Jap designed Gardner in.It probably would have been a two stroke.

But some say that it took British engineering to make Jap bikes better which is why they were using Dresda modifications to Jap bikes because their engines were often faster than their frames.

hiya,
John us Brits had a champion who knew a thing or two about Percy’s, the man in question was Mr John Killingbeck now that man could make a Gardner engine run as sweet as a nut and increase the output by a huge margin needless to say the Patricroft boffins didn’t accept his methods, I worked on the haulage side of his business back in the 60s and at one time drove an Atki with a 150 G installed and believe me there wasn’t much could touch it pulling and tootling along he sure was a magician as far as engine tweaking was concerned.
thanks harry long retired.

Biased I know but a 14ltr ■■■■■■■ Big Cam with an Eminox, ours is tweaked to 400 and its the whistle as it pulls away that gets me every time, though it couldn’t compete with the E10 I followed it in last year to one rally (cracked manifold gasket!)

Hiya harry …i did’nt have any problems with gardners i used to do stoke. change over in dover and back.thats when it was down the archway round the back of bow and through the blackwall off down the A2 through canterbury a quick swap with the europe lads. it was hevan when you got to the m1 north at mill hill and giver her some 70+ that was a 1970 erf gardner180
6 speed brown/eaton 2 speed…I.ve earned some good pay slips with gardners.
I’ve had a quick count and have driven over 30 trucks with Gardner engines …that even was a surprise to me

I am sorry for taking this thread too far off track. I will bring it back soon, promise…

It took a Polish driver to help the Japanese start to win races, Eugen Wotzlawek was riding for the MZ team and escaped to freedom from Denmark. It took Honda until 1982 to build their first two stroke racing motorcycle after Ernst Eugen Degner had passed all his knowledge to Suzuki.

Meanwhile back to lorries and nice engine sounds, here we are going back to basics with more Polish drivers in Jelcz trucks.

With obligatory dark moustaches, although several of the men have beards

I heard this motor coming into Whitwood and recognised the “crack” immediately.Superb!! and still working. Ps.525 ■■■■■■■■

for me best sounding engine no1 commer ts3 then foden 2 stroke then v8 iveco

hi lads, this scania has a great sound as he gives it some welly,i know there is lots of motors that have a great sound when accelerating, most memorable for me was the BRM 1.6 supercharged racing car and the V8 moto guzzi that Dickie dale and bill lomas rode in the 50tys bumper :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

Which truck engine do you think sounds the best? My all time favourite has got to be the Scania V8 closely followed by the 14lt ■■■■■■■ . For some reason Volvo’s Daf’s Renaults Iveco’s just don’t make the right noise .

a whistling leyland comet no contest

well I have come across a few thats made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end over the years

Merc 1633 V8 twin turbo
Leyland 6.98 TV engine
Perkings 6354 T
F88 290 with a stack
F16 470 with a straight through pipe

and at the moment I have the pleasure of a DAF CF 310 with a stack and that sings like all of girls aloud lol

Greetings.
Another sound I liked was the Volvo Estate car with the Volkswagen Six cylinder diesel in it,normally in an LT 35.It was best on tickover. A long time ago,the sound of a Drott bulldozer on tickover. The BSA Gold Star 500cc.as you closed the throttle.Halcyon days.Regards,900x20.
