And here’s me thinking you’d have gone for an SOM Maddison Guy Big J 8LXB.Dennis.

Just back from holiday in Malta, older vehicles getting scarcer.Still some great noises from the buses, though this will end soon as Arriva take over the running of Malta bus next year. That will end the 40p fair.Took some photos will put them on when I get time. P.S.240 for reliability and economy Dennis.

The 335 pre-dated the ‘Big Cam’ models I think Andrew. You’re looking at around 1978 before they started appearing in any significant numbers in the UK. The 335 had been available in ERFs and Guys (probably others too) from at least 1973 - possibly earlier. There’s a picture of one of King’s from Bristol - an ERF MW 6x4 heavy haulage tractor with a 335 in it, which was in the 1974 edition of ‘The Observers Book of Commercial Vehicles’ which gives you some idea of the timescales.

I drove a 73 big j with a 290 in it which was the same model as Mervyn Edwards (pre big cam) and were in fact an American built ■■■■■■■■ The turbo was a lot bigger than the English version, It was a simple pump mod to take them to 335 but even the 290 version would leave 88’s &110’s in the dust. We had dozens of them at the Midlands BRS depots but I believe Pickfords had some 335 versions.

Hi Marky & Trev, thanks , wasnt sure when the big cam came out,but remember having a 320 E14 on demo from Richard Reads and making a ■■■■ up of the gearbox up the Birdlip( just by the old cafe) and coming to a standstill. I was passed by two E10 325s before I could get going again, but I passed both of them before I came over the top, what a motor, it would eat a 385 F12,and when I sorted the Eaton I always thought it was a fantastic box, mind you it was a demo & was prob. played with !!

Around 1993/1994 i drove an ERF with a 14litre ■■■■■■■ 325 and Twin Splitter,grossing 36tons.
It surprised and upset a lot of people.
The more you put on it,the more it pulled and it was a pleasure to drive.

Have some great memories of Malta buses, but also ‘scary’ ones. I recall standing at the bus stop outside the hotel near the Gozo ferry, just happened to glance down and noticed a wheel nut snapped off!! Anyway “the bride” and I got on but I nearly **** myself at every corner, When we were waitng at the bus station for our return journey I was very relieved to find it was a different bus. Later in the
holiday we were waiting at the same stop to go into town, the bus stopped (sameone) it now had two broken wheelstuds next to eachother!! That really did cause some aggro as my lady wife was already onboard and I wouldn’t get on. Needless to say it still comes up now and then and I am the ■■■■ of the jokes. That aside you had to admire the Maltese for their ingenuity and skill at what they could do with clapped out kit.

Going back to the 335 Big J, great sounding motor, but dont think that I would have swaped it for my 111.( what I did hanker after was a 141 though) regards Andrew…

Yes- as said - Merv’s Big J’s were ex BRS and small cam ■■■■■■■ 290 powered. He did “tweak” them though.

My favorites

■■■■■■■ 14ltr (Big Cam)
Magirus Deutz V8
Mercedes V8
Scania V8 with side exhausts!!

No ones mentioned MAN’s V10 :astonished: :astonished: never heard one myself but they must have made a lovely rumble

A bit off the lorry engine, but the best sound I can remember was about five years ago at an air display at Llanidloes in Mid Wales.i parked on the top of a hill and watched a Lancaster Bomber climbing up out of the valley, the sound from the Rolls Royce Merlin engines was awesome.
Cheers Dave.

Hiya Dave,Iv’e just been having a glance on the Motor Transport site and there’s a post on there about a haulage firm in the Midlands thats packing it in and one of the reasons is that Fuel accounts for 66% of his operating costs!! I know this has nothing to do with this thread but niether is Lancaster Bombers!!! Cheers Dennis.

They leave it run on BST all year around on TruckNet. I think its for the rest of Europe. You can go on user profile and look at Board preferences and alter the time I think.
