Best sounding engines

Hi, I have to agree with Pete, I always loved the sound of my old F88, it had a front silencer behind the front bumper and came out of the side, it sounded fantastic going through a tunnel, always wound the window down just to listen to it. My F10 also sounded good, had it tweeked by Feathers and had a upright stack. Countrywides “Hogtrotter” sounds great to, but I well remember a Guy big J blowing my Scania 111 away on the motorway years ago, straight through pipes and must have been a stroked engine, cant remember wheather I was more upset by being shown a clean pair of wheels or impressed with the sound, mind you the old 111 never was over fast, just under 70 was flat out.

That would have been a Smith of Maddiston Guy,complete with a 240 Gardner in it!!!

Take it easy ,

Rgds,

David

hiya,
There you go Dennis someone has seen the elusive 8 pot 240 engined Guy, now is that proof enough.
thanks harry long retired.

I can do without you piling into me “H”!!! Here’s me thinking you were a mate-----talk about getting kicked when your down!!! Anyway I think that Big J had a ■■■■■■■ 290 in it same as those Trev H talks about. An 8LXB didn’t perform that well did it? Cheers Dennis.

hiya,
Dennis, 220 ■■■■■■■ and 180 Gardner are the only two i’ve punched about, stick a 240 in a big “J” “of which i’ve driven many”, it would have to have been remotely controlled shove that lump in and there would have been no room in the shed for me, still your mate Dennis and waiting with bated breath for the elusive proof to be put on here or the SOM thread, who knows mate pigs might fly, (i have on occasion seen pink flying elephants) but they have been single malt induced.

Hi Both, dont know what engine it was running, just remember being completley cheesed off by being quickly left by a old british motor, had it beeen a F89, 141, a Detroit TM or even a Transcon I could have accepted it better, but british motors wernt supposed to do that !!. But I do remember that sound blowing through upright stacks, and no they wernt chrome.
regards Andrew

The 140 that John Williams brings back to life on Destination Doha does sound sweet.

back in the 60s the av505 aec marshal with the short exhaust, for decibels i think the ■■■■■■■ engined doge k series.
erf b series with 240 gardner in 70s, once the scania v8 was estasblished say no more v8 rule

This one of the best sounding engines of all time, had one in my old Bedford TM, followed by my old Mack Cabover with the Maxidyne motor.

This is what they should have fitted in the TM.

Well you all know I’m a scania man so the V8 scania 140 141 142 143 144 with or with out eminox  sound great  but for me Volvo F16 with a eminox or twin eminox  full loaded flat to the mat pulling now that’s a sweet sound a deep roar and a lil turbo noise

Nope, You’re all wrong. This is the best sounding motor. C15 550 through twin stacks. Single turbo so it just sounds sweet.

How about something against the norm , like … the Maggy Deutz aircooled engine? :sunglasses: used to like the perkins & ■■■■■■■ V8s in the ‘middleweights’ like the D series etc.

Just had a pair of straight through mufflers put on mine, I get a bit more whistle as mine is the twin turbo, but it really rumbles at 1200-1300rpm and when I hit the jakes it sounds like a machine gun, can’t wait to get it in a tunnel :stuck_out_tongue:

But this probably sounds better through a good set of headphones or speakers than that would in a tunnel.

Hi, just found that Guy that blew my 111 away, Mervin Edwards owned it and its on the Guy Big J thread, ran a big 335 ■■■■■■■■ suppose that it might have been a big cam then ■■.

The 335 pre-dated the ‘Big Cam’ models I think Andrew. You’re looking at around 1978 before they started appearing in any significant numbers in the UK. The 335 had been available in ERFs and Guys (probably others too) from at least 1973 - possibly earlier. There’s a picture of one of King’s from Bristol - an ERF MW 6x4 heavy haulage tractor with a 335 in it, which was in the 1974 edition of ‘The Observers Book of Commercial Vehicles’ which gives you some idea of the timescales.

Mine has a resonator… On the jakes at 1700 RPM it sets alarms off…

I drove a 73 big j with a 290 in it which was the same model as Mervyn Edwards (pre big cam) and were in fact an American built ■■■■■■■■ The turbo was a lot bigger than the English version, It was a simple pump mod to take them to 335 but even the 290 version would leave 88’s &110’s in the dust. We had dozens of them at the Midlands BRS depots but I believe Pickfords had some 335 versions.

Hi Marky & Trev, thanks , wasnt sure when the big cam came out,but remember having a 320 E14 on demo from Richard Reads and making a ■■■■ up of the gearbox up the Birdlip( just by the old cafe) and coming to a standstill. I was passed by two E10 325s before I could get going again, but I passed both of them before I came over the top, what a motor, it would eat a 385 F12,and when I sorted the Eaton I always thought it was a fantastic box, mind you it was a demo & was prob. played with !!
Going back to the 335 Big J, great sounding motor, but dont think that I would have swaped it for my 111.( what I did hanker after was a 141 though) regards Andrew…

Hi Andrew,
Yes the 14ltr ■■■■■■■ motor was a cracker, I had some fun driving the old “j’s” but of course comfort wise they were a world away from Scania or Volvo.

Found this beauty in a shed round the back of the farm next to our yard. Its a Gardner 180 taken out of one of our old ERFs years ago now used as back up generator just in case the electric goes down… Awesome… :grimacing:

Click on the pic to hear it… an enjoy…

Some more pics of the Gardner 180…
