Best sounding engines

Bewick:
Right lads I’m going to throw a brick into this “smooth running and sounding” thread! These 3 engines enter the power scale at the very foot of the table as far as quality engines are concerned but they are never-the-less all reliable, economical and honest little engines in my opinion. They are as follows------ 1) Gardner 5LW,2)Gardner 4LK,3)Albion 4cyl (not sure of the exact Albion designation). If some saddo’s can “salivinate” over a Foden 2 stroke I am prepared to endure the “flak” over these three nominations. But I can tell you this I would sooner have my yard full of 4 & 5 cyl Gardner’s and Albion engined motors than a yard full of Foden “screamers”. I rest my case! Bewick.

But would this wagon go like this if it had any of those fitted in it instead. :open_mouth:

Oh yes! It sounded fabulous! Painfully slow, but fabulous!

Well Chris you are so tactful with your description of a Foden 2 stroke “crawling over Shap” If ever there was a vote for Worst ever British built heavy commercial I am sure that the 2 stroked engine Foden would win “hands down”.The combination had everything going for it! Crappy cab and chassis, nightmare gearbox, and the “piece de resistance” what must be the worst engine ever produced!! Cheers Dennis.

You should get a job as a politician. :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

For me it has to be the 14 Ltr ■■■■■■■■ in fact in my own hummble oppinion, very few engines sound as good as some of the ■■■■■■■ units. I loved the snarling sound of the old nh 220’s they sounded realy noisey and powerful, but as i said the 14 ltrs just have a lovely deep organic noise that no engine can match, even v8 Scanias with those stupid side pipes and the drivers reving the nuts off em!
Scania 112’s sounded good though, as did L10 ■■■■■■■■ 14.6 ltr CATS and yes i agree volvo D12’s sound as though they’ve got a 30 piece socket set rattling around in the rocker cover!!!
■■■■■■■ ALL THE WAY.

My b series erf 8cl GARDNER 240, loverly sound incold frosty morning, blue smoke, what a sight. :

Even better sounding when fitted into a Guy Big J!!

Seriously, I would go with the Foden stroker, though alas I didn’t have the pleasure of driving one as ours had Gardner, ■■■■■■■ and R/ Royce power units.

Pete.

Hi Pete you would’nt happen to be an ex Smith of Maddiston driver would you? Bewick.

No Dennis, not guilty on that score! You might not have liked the Foden Stroker, but the driver’s certainly did! The Gardner 150 was a big let down to them after they had been used to the speed of the MK V11 two stroke, and the Foden 12 speed box was a joy to use especially around our Peak District hills compared to the likes of David Brown etc. Never the same when they decided to fit Fuller’s.

Pete.

Point taken Pete! If you had plenty of gears and could use them you could make any motor perform.Did you mean that when they fitted the Fuller behind the Foden engine or the Gardner? We once ran an Atki with the 220■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ 610/Eaton 2 speed, and it could outperform 8LXBs and the early Volvo F88s.You had 20 gears to play with i. e.let it drop back 250revs then drop it half a gear and keep going! You could ■■■■ them Penrith men off big style on the M6! Iv’e seen the odd one run across the services to have a look at the Atki and inquire as to its spec!! Cheers Dennis.

I think that was what the driver used as his defence against the charges  .But when they saw the pedestrian walking and the car coming the other way not looking as though it was doing 80 mph they threw that line of defence out.  But some say that it’s actually a ghost truck driven by the ghost of a long gone Foden Two Stroke driver. :open_mouth:

I always thought my old 88 volvo mid-70’s was a real nice sounding truck normal engine, normal exhaust.

Hi, I have to agree with Pete, I always loved the sound of my old F88, it had a front silencer behind the front bumper and came out of the side, it sounded fantastic going through a tunnel, always wound the window down just to listen to it. My F10 also sounded good, had it tweeked by Feathers and had a upright stack. Countrywides “Hogtrotter” sounds great to, but I well remember a Guy big J blowing my Scania 111 away on the motorway years ago, straight through pipes and must have been a stroked engine, cant remember wheather I was more upset by being shown a clean pair of wheels or impressed with the sound, mind you the old 111 never was over fast, just under 70 was flat out.

Bewick mentions liking the sound of the four cylinder Albion. There is a picture posted by “Bumper” in the north east thread of Jim Wilkinsons magnificent 1950 Albion it regularly records 27mpg!! I bet most of us who have to buy the fuel would gladly sacrifice the “music” for the mpg now.

The best engine sound I ever heard running was the bloody gennie me and me mate had to crank over every morning before we could have a cuppa and get some lights on, it was like trying to wind up one of the Titanics anchors and if it didn’t go you knew you had to go through it all again, with the fitters shouting obscenities from the darkness! I remember the ear bursting noise of a K Series Dodge with the Chrysler V8 in we had, when ever it passed close to a wall, I’m sure this thing shattered milk bottles when it passed houses too, was good though, some of these young’ns with straight through exhausts on their old Corsa’s would be proud of it. In the Army the Stalwart took some beating for a real throaty discharge, topped off with a back fire like Prince Charles on a Pheasant shoot, or should that be Peasant! Franky.

Oooh, that brought back memories Carryfast, I was a Self Propelled Gun Bunny myself so looked up what You Tube had on the Abbott Gun, some excellent stuff. We used to chuck tinned food onto the silencer located along the nearside so between position moves it was nice and hot when we got a chance for a bite and having a kip on top of the hot engine louvres was the best nights sleep you could get outdoors. However the engines were prone to the odd mishap so it wasn’t unusual to do a pack lift (engine change) about two in the morning, ugh, forgot about that bit! Cheers Franky.
