Best Sat Nav

Im sure this topic has been around longer then the wheel, but, what do people find to be the best Sat Nav for todays trucking day and age.

Ive heard so different Sat Nav systems having a ‘truck’ mode that only directs you thought the roads that are suitable for a HGV.

What do people use, come on, share the love

It could well be true but if it is, it’s the first I’ve heard of it.

I use a TomTom One Europe, which does the job well. I have UK bridge heights and other truck-related POIs on it, but you can’t set a route to avoid low bridges.

All SatNavs require a large dose of common sense to be applied by the operator.

I’m not aware of a sat nav that directs trucks only down suitable roads either.
I use a Tomtom Go 910 with the cameras and bridge heights and a good road atlas.

That can’t be repeated often enough in my opinion given the stories we here about people using sat navs

in conjunction with 1 of these Link to Amazon

Though bridge hight POI`s used to be found here http://www.willow-house.co.uk/
but it seems they are no longer available.
but i do have the TomTom ones on an email somewhere.

but they are only useful you drive the same hight truck every day, as you have to install the POI`s for that hight truck, installing ALL the files on a satnav, will warn you of ALL bridges, irrespective of your truck hight

though a certain local vendor of truck assesories, at a local truck stop, I spoke to a while ago, was trying to locate the files, and attempt to put them on a CD and sell em to patrons of his fine emporium for profit… for around £5 a disc
Seems that the patrons where asking the vendor, where they could get em

The bridge heights can be bought for a tenner from here supposedly with updates.
I don’t know about any other sat nav but on the Tomtom you can disable any bridge heights you don’t need.

Auto Express are doing a review of 100 Sat Navs this week.

Yup i deffo still got the bridge POIs on an email theyre in tomtom OV2 file format
and if robin doesn`t mind, I might be willing to fwd the email on at some point to a couple of forum members

Never heard of a sat nav with truck mode before,

I use a sat nav and also a truckers atlas

I use Autoroute 2007with AR keys on my lap top through a 7 inch screen mounted low down on my dash board, it is the only mapping I have used that lets you zoom out and still retain detail which is very useful when you come to low bridges and unsuitable roads as re routing is made a lot easier when you can see all the roads around the hazard. This system is only good if you have a lap top PC which I use as a TV, DVD player, music player and Internet surfing when I park near a hot spot.
I have tom tom on my pda, but don’t like it.

i use tomtom one v2, ive always used tomtoms from early days loaded onto a dell pda to the current tomtom one v2…couple of weeks ago i upgraded my mobile, im on o2 and i chose a o2 xda orbit it comes with built in gps reciever…and i also got alk copilot 6 with it free…im very impressed with it so much ive been using it more than my tomtom and ive just ordered the alk copilot 7 upgrade

I think Garmin SatNavs have a “truck” setting, but all this does is to calculate the journey time using a lower speed and giving a longer journey time.

On my TomTom (and presumably all SatNavs) you can configure it to a lower speed, I use 54mph, and perhaps this is what the OP was referring to?

Although this does sometimes alter your route- for example, heading from Kent to Wales the lower speed setting will send me down the M3 and through Bracknell, the higher setting sends me M25/M4, it doesn’t avoid weight limits, or unsuitable roads.

Alix at pocketgps world is probably the person to ask though.

Route 66 has a “Truck” mode but its pretty worthless. Doesn’t avoid low bridges or weight limits as it doesn’t have it and you can’t add POI’s either. Also, there’s no 7 digit postcode lookup in the version I had although that may have changed.

Tomtom plus low bridge POI plus common sense is the best combo.

I have a garmin c550 with trafficmaster, which is pretty good as it diverts me round the hold ups.
As for the truck mode what a load of crap.

Navigon Navigator 5 is what I have, and it has a truck mode. Sets the speed limit for HGVs and steers me away from back roads. Is a bit interesting when it comes to U turns as well as it only directs me on roundabouts to do U turns or large roadways.

The timing is accurate too, always been a blessing when driving 7.5t’s that aren’t restricted. However, more and more of the 7.5t’s are restricted it does help

When I upgrade I might consider the Co Pilot or the Navigon again, but not TT. Sorry. No.

Becker Traffic Assist Pro 7916

This has a Truck mode, uses the Sirfstar III chipset and uses Navteq maps. I have just noticed an advert for it in the Daily Mail today, apparently Lidl will be selling it for roughly $190 (Pounds. My laptop is canadian so only has dollar symbol). It is also 12v/24v capable, has Full Euro mapping and Postcode search, including TMC which receives Traffic Delay adjusting, re-routing you if you wish.
Their is also a couple of PC navigation programs which state Trucking mode, one of which allows you block roads you know are unsuitable. The company I saw were selling the software and a gps receiver for $180 (pounds) and if a few of us got together, we could possibly get a discount for a bulk order ■■

Guys search for INDAGO this is the sat nav system designed for the truck driver, it costs up to £500 but i noticed in a volvo dealership a poster advertising it for £300
Apparently you tell it the height of your truck & some other stuff & it works out the safest route.

Personally I use a Map good old fashioned knowlage, commen sense & most importantly my eyes (when there open  )

The Snooper website is offering the Indago for $229 (pounds) inc delivery

Ahh but take note it does not include the low bridge software that is extra.
