Again thanks to those who helped

The Bear/ Froggy…
I have, as you know, been a driver for the past 6 years, and am more than capable of reading a map. However, I am not ashamed to say that there are times when I can see two potential routes from A to B and am in two minds as to which is the better.
At that point I have posted on these forums and given the two options, in the hope that someone with local knowledge would be able to help me in the making of my decision. That might be because of roadworks which have appeared since I last went a certain way…or a low bridge which I’d forgotten about…or because one road is far more twisty and hence slow than it looks on the map, something which is by no means uncommon.
Should I hand my licence back to DVLA now, as I cannot yet pass the “all seeing, all knowing” test■■?
Jonboy, you mentioned the railway bridge on the end of Sankt Augustin way near Asda. Just as an aside and a bit of useless info Nowork Rail had 40 bridge strikes last year, 16 of them were that bridge, so like you said go careful.
If I could get a word in edgeways,
depending on time of day and slightly longer but can be quicker try

yeah and whats wrong with that times have moved on and for the better i cant rope and sheet and have no intention of learning its dosent make me a worse driver in fact for some strange reason i would rather pull back a curtain than try and sheet a trailer in the wind and rain.

What, you’ve never hand balled 900+ 1/2 hundred weight bags of grain, seed or spuds, in horizontal rain, trying to keep paper bags dry and hold the sheet down as you work back down the trailer
You hav’nt lived

Again, I’ve done the same thing myself…along the lines of Think To Self “Hmmm…now if I was in the wagon I’d probably go this way for x y and z reason…but since I’m in the car Route B might be worth a shot…that said, I have to get myself down there by such-and-such a time for blah reason, and there may be roadworks, or speed cameras or whatever reason why that isn’t such a good idea…plus it’d be handy to know for future reference…sod it, I’ll ask the lads on TruckNet, they’ll know…”
Same arguement applies…since I can’t pass the “all seeing, all knowing, far too big and clever to admit others might know things that I don’t”" test should I surrender my licence forthwith?
I’m sorry, but I just can’t see what the heinous crime is here. I’m a great believer that the only stupid question is the one you don’t ask…and the only stupid person is the one who’s too proud to ask. PMAC wasn’t sure for whatever reason - that reason being totally irrelevant - so he did the sensible thing and sought a wider opinion. The sharing of information is one of the main reasons for this website’s existance, after all…
Just what is so wrong with that?
im not having ago at pmac for asking or anyone else for that matter but personally if theres two routes look at the most straight forward one id never dream of asking for routes around england i just look at the map and go for it.
What if it looks even stevens on paper, but you don’t know which is easiest in practise Carl? I mean yeah, 9 times out of 10 you just flip a coin and go for it…but if you’re at home, have got a bit of time, and the resources are at your fingertips, why not ask?
If someone was posting to check routes every day, every time they went somewhere, the detractors here would have a point…but once in a blue moon when you’ve time to think about it? What on earth is the problem?
I guess I just can’t see the harm, and certainly can’t see any reason for the horror filled exclamations the poor guy received…
lucy i havnt got a problem with them asking as i said .ive always done it that way. thats just me.i was taught the hard way and was told if you wanna learn your way around the country get yerself a map and learn, and i did. ive never had sat nav but it would be nice as i could get rid of all my bloody maps and save some room.
I know you haven’t carl…the mildly irate bit wasn’t aimed at you.
I guess it’s precisely because I, too, had to learn the hard way that I’m such an advocate of people avoiding that agony now that technology is rendering at least some of the pain unnecessary…There are no prizes for being a martyr, after all.
What I personally think when I give an answer to someone on here is that not only the person asking the question, - in this case PMAC, - will find my answer(s) useful for future reference, but hundreds or possibly thousands of others who will read it now or refer back to it in the future.
Before the Internet, we had Transport Cafes for this purpose - passing on info. and route planning advice to others - we haven’t got many of them left now.
With forums like this we can all share our knowledge and experience, it’s a pity though that more people don’t get involved. Over 3000 members now, and it’s usually the same 500 or so (my guesstimate) that do all the ‘graft’ - answering questions, starting topics, doing diaries, asking noobie questions, posting pics. and links, etc.
I just wish more people would be confident enough to chip in now and again with sommat or other.
What do others think ? - looking down the membership list there is a massive number of ‘zero posts’.
Mind you, fear of getting your head bitten off for asking what (to some) is a simple question might put some potential posters off !
