Benefits street

What are your thoughts in this I reckon it will be pretty good insight at what we are actually paying for in our pay packs with tax etc

I already know, just 10% of the welfare budget is spent on unemployment benefit, the bulk goes on old age pensions.

I watched a programme last year about pensioners, it was about their benefits, winter fuel, bus pass etc.
They went to a golf club and spoke with some of the pensioners who admitted that they don’t need the money but why shouldn’t they take it, when they have paid in all their lives!
They said they would sooner spend the money on new golf clubs than give it to a single parent.
EDIT- The jobs that these pensioners had before we’re decent jobs in banking and management types, they all had good final salary schemes and holiday homes, they were not the old man and lady who can’t afford to put the heating on.

Peter Stringfellow phoned up the DWP and asked about giving the money back they said he can’t and to give it to someone if he doesn’t want it!

They stated in the programme that £1 in EVERY £4 spent by the UK government is spent on the old age pensioners. That’s every single department not just the welfare budget 1 in every 4 is a shocking amount to spend on such a small percentage of the population.

I bet they do not mention that - or the fact that loads are getting benefits because they are on low wages

I have a friend that retired to Spain about 13 years ago…and was able (and did) claim the winter fuel allowance while living on the Costa Del Sol …

I’ve no doubt that those who moan the loudest about the excessive amount pensioners receive from the state now will be the same ones who moan loudest about the pittance they receive when they reach retirement.

DM has an article about it:

I couldn’t agree more.

I’ve no problem with people getting benefits or pensions, I’ve been lucky having never had to claim any yet, but I want it to be there incase. Pensions are the same, I hope to get old enough to get mine and my mother is collecting hers and why not.

The problem is for some benefits becomes the norm and then it seems normal for their children, of course they keep trying to tighten up the system, but the people that is aimed at know how to play the system, so it rarely affects them, but it does affect those that most would consider worthy of benefits.

I can’t believe that no one has yet suggested that the government might want to ask the Army to carry out a cull of:-

Pensioners
Sick Lame & Lazy
Disabled Folk
Unemployed
Foreigners

And just about any poor sod that doesn’t or can’t work hard and want to get on.

There is no moral or ethical compass anymore and the only things people seem to care about is material and monetary wealth.

There’s no such thing as society anymore, as we were once told by a “great” politician. It’s all look after number 1 and screw anybody that needs a bit of help.

Too true fella, too true.

It’s nice to see so many of you taken in by this, while there are many people claiming when they shouldn’t, it pales at what big business is not paying in taxes, so while you all slag off a few scroungers, the real ripoff merchants are big companies, and they are getting away with it.

Don’t forget the working poor (those on working tax credits)

I’m not saying those that need it shouldn’t get it, in fact I think that those who only have a state income, or a very low private pension should get more help.
But the people in this programme were on £40,000+ a year and they quoted there are 2.5 million more pensioners in the same position.
My Grandfather is the same, saved all his life, invested wisely, has a decent pit pension and a good income from his 1000’s of shares and savings yet moaned like buggery when my Gran died about how his income had dropped (that was about a year after she had died not straight away) I bet he still has about £3000 a month coming in. He gets free coal from the pit, yet I bet 100% he still gets the winter fuel allowance.

All I’m saying is it should be means tested and that anyone that thinks that 1 in 4 of every £ spent by the UK government, goes on pensioners is ok needs their head looking at, that’s 10’s of billions a year just on people over 65.
