I passed a kiddy on a bike on the way in to work tonight, hood up and sat upright, so it was obvious to me that he wasn’t holding the handlebars. Gave him some extra room as he was swerving about a bit and as I was going past him, noticed he was texting!!

A simple question.
You’re stopped at the side of the road to nip to the chippy in your truck, you swing the door open and take out a cyclist.
Who here thinks you won’t get done for it?

I thought Jeremy Vine coverage of this case was pretty much what I’d expect of him. :unamused: and personally I’m not a fan of sticking people in prison for careless mistakes. It won’t bring the victim back to life and probably won’t be much of a deterrent to others. Better to find out what happened and try and stop it happening again, whether through education and changing attitudes or trying to find a way not to have that situation in the first place.

We can all say things like the cyclist should keep away from parked cars, but how practical is that really?
And the bus should have been further back, maybe true in and ideal world, but what if he was moving to overtake the cyclist at one point he would have been to close to stop. Unless we say no vehicle must overtake cyclists and stay the stopping distance behind, about 75ft or 23m at 30mph that nearly the length of 1.5 artics.

From what I’ve heard of this case I can’t see how the cyclist can be blamed, the driver apparently flung the door open into the flow of traffic, whilst the bike was alongside of the door he had no chance to avoid it. Even if the driver had looked first he may not of seen the bike as his windows were heavily tinted only letting 17% of the light through the legal limit is 70%.

It’s very impractical on todays roads, parked vehicles on both sides of a 2 way street with traffic moving in both directions, random placing of bollards etc.

The car windows were of an illegal tint making it almost (if not fully) impossible to see the driver in the car - something we usually look for when passing vehicles either in our vehicle, on a cycle, on a motorbike etc.

Jeremy Vine said at one point ‘what most people do is open the door a small bit, so you can see through the gap, hear more, and also warn others what you’re about to do’ and he’s right, who just flings the door open? An arrogant self important ■■■■ is who.

K5Project:
I.e I’m driving down the road and someone opens there door and Knock the door off with my car who’s fault is it? mine for not leaving enough space.

Wrong, had this happen when I was driving a bus years ago, and the car driver had to pay for the damage to the bus.

When we all learnt to drive the mantra was Mirror ,signal then Manouver. Opening the door should be regarded as a manouvre.I have no problem with other road users with the exception of horse riders, they boil my p$ss mainly with their stuck up I have more money than you attitude.I dont mind a pair of tight little buttocks bobbing up and down in front of me but when they are on the phone riding two abreast braying away at each other.Grr,grr.

Muppet. I don’t have more money than you - I probably have about the same money as a homeless person, my missus has a horse.
Riding 2 abreast is sometimes the inside horse getting used to traffic - so is to protect the motorist as much as the horse, or sometimes because it’s a child on the inside horse etc.

Horses and cyclists have a RIGHT to use the road, the rest of us only have a licenced privilege, which after reading some of the comments on here should be taken away :smiling_imp:

Yeah, ok, let’s do that then. See how many supermarkets get their deliveries on horses and cycles…

Probably faster if Toscos used horses
