BBC breakfast short vid on lorry drivers

Take no notice of that Maoster fella Rob.

We were at our mighty fleet’s Rugby truckstop yesterday mate and I feel I must divulge confidential information sadly. The man who looks oddly attractive in Oakley’s asked me to get him an application form :open_mouth:

After explaining to the man that it was no longer 1983 and that computer literacy was required to start his career with the UK’s coveted haulier, he dropped his camel cigarette into my coffee, gave me the finger, and then tore off in his 500 bhp MAN XXL.

It was an odd tantrum yet strangely intoxicating. Such is the desire to work for Willy.

Mazzer2:
Depends on where you live in the country in the South East yes by comparison driving a lorry is a poorly paid job but not so much in other parts I take home considerably more than my other half who is a civil servant than her gross salary, a job requiring more qualifications than me and with much higher stress levels. Compared to other jobs locally out of driving I could not earn near what I am on due to the low wage base of the local economy

Tbh mate how much someone earns isn’t any of my business. And as long as they are happy it’s all good with me.

My point was about someone else giving it large bragging about their salary (putting another man down who is feeding his family) when in reality they have little to brag about at all.

In the economic climate that is going to come anyone earning will be doing very very well. Where I’m from driving is considered a low wage job - but a lot of the bankers and businessmen might be wishing they had a class 1 to fall back on when the economy collapses into a depression as I predict.

The very first words spoken by a lorry driver in the video are “I’ve always wanted to be a lorry driver, for this reason, to keep the country going” :unamused:

I wonder if anyone in the UK has ever become a lorry driver to keep the country going

eagerbeaver:
As for your illustrious Howden’s career that pays you an enormous amount of money, I think you are bullshining. I’ve worked for Howden’s on agency, and I’ve also done Zenith Appleton depot (driving Howden’s Daf CF’s based there) :bulb:

I don’t bullshine as you put it.

Where did you do Howdens on agency, was it at Runcorn or Zenith? Zenith isn’t Howdens it’s one of the subbbies they use so whatever rate you were getting on there wasn’t likely to be the same that agency at Howdens got paid.

So as you’re slinging the insults…

To ■■■■ on your bonfire…well as you know the Swedish Derogation of the AWR was repealed as of 6th April so those of us actually at Howdens and not one of their subbies are now on the same hourly rate as their drivers. No idea when you were at them on agency, although if you were at Zenith you never were, but we got £3/hr pay rise on our agency rate from 6th April to bring us up to parity pay. I’ll just leave this here from this week’s wage slip:

[DELETED]

And no I’m not Ltd, never was and as of April 6th nobody at my agency is.

As for the wages at the green magnificence, I did less than 45 hrs the week before last (Mon-Fri day’s) and brought home £400 (45 hrs guaranteed contract), a lot better than many on here. So basically Conor, I think you are chatting sheet again

I took home £120 more for 43.5hrs including breaks.

Still think I’m chatting sheet?

Do you not get a £12.36 daily allowance as well?

Is that night rate?

Sorry Conor  I simply wanted you to reveal both your wages and self perceived level of intelligence, in fairness I didn’t realise it would rile you that much as to completely embarrass yourself with your willy waving  It used to be fun on here enjoying a little mental combat, however I should be ashamed of myself for allowing you to enter the arena unarmed.

I am disappointed in you. There is no link to the Stobart debt…

commonrail:
Is that night rate?

Ssshhh….you are going to spoil it

Ahhh right…so THAT’S what he meant when he said he was thinking of working for WILLY. :bulb:
Thank Christ for that.

     I’m sorely tempted to post the video of us slagging Robroy but I fear that it wouldn’t meet “community standards” and I’d be joining you in premod club!

Btw, it was tea, not coffee as I was paying.

Nite Owl:
Do you not get a £12.36 daily allowance as well?

From what I can gather that’s for those on nights. Not been back on nights yet but the guys I know who are said they got a shift allowance. I know that prior to April 6th we were on £1/hr more on nights than days so a £12.36 daily allowance applying for the nights would sound about right.

commonrail:
Is that night rate?

Nope, days.

I believe the drivers at Wren aren’t far behind. It’s a bit of a damning indictment of road haulage when kitchen manufacturers believe lorry drivers skills are worth that kind of money but UK haulage PLC don’t seem to value them above unskilled worker rates.

Good day rate.
What’s the night rate…then?

Edit
Just read you reply to nite owl

No, the only person who has embarrassed themselves is you yet again making the mistake of calling me a liar and yet again being made to look an arse. i would’ve thought you’d learnt given how many times you’ve done that.

I am disappointed in you. There is no link to the Stobart debt…

The Warrington-based company, which counts Amazon, Coca-Cola and Tesco among its customers, recorded a loss of at least £12m in the first half of the financial year. It is also struggling with £200m worth of debt. However, accounting problems revealed in August mean the financial situation could be much worse.

Come on Conor, you are better than this. Gloating about your wage on a lorry forum (especially during the current crisis) is pretty crass. We all know you believe yourself to be superior than us mere peloton dwellers, but it’s a bit surprising you are letting someone as mischievous as the world famous Beaver run you around in circles :grimacing:

So sitting around late after 11pm on a Sat night getting wound up by me is no good for your health and I am concerned for you. It would appear you have quoted an article from The Guardian from AT LEAST (quote from the site) 4 months ago
The £460 million debt you claimed is nowhere to be seen…

So show us lesser mortals on here your link to the £460 million debt. Oh wait, you cannot because you are chatting more sheet

commonrail:
Good day rate.
What’s the night rate…then?

No commonrail, you were indeed on the right track. The payslip shown is a generic one and not only that, but there was some erm…‘revealing data’ on the actual payslip posted which got mysteriously ‘edited’ by our friend last night at 11.23pm

You are quick Monsieur Tempoaire du Howden, but more like a diesel astra compared to the Ferrariesque world famous Beaver :sunglasses:

Confused now.
Looked like just under £16 basic.

Keeping the country ticking over thread mate  Two days ago he seems to be bragging about his night driving knowledge, and on this thread the word ‘yet’ is carefully inserted into one of his post’s…

No way on earth agency PAYE pays £16 per hour for Mon-Fri day shifts non ADR carting chipboard around.

Ahh…i see.

I have a friend who does night trunking for howden through the same agency. I’ve seen their wage slip and can tell you that they get £15.78 per hour plus a shift bonus of £12.36 per shift.

Where I used to work the day and night drivers were paid the same but there was a premium payment for any hours between 8pm and 6am. Obviously the night drivers got a lot more of this.

It’s not unrealistic for day and night drivers to have the same basic hourly rate.

This thread is better than any plot in any soap currently being screened on TV.
Long may it continue.
