Bargain Booze heading for administration

Another company one about to go…

Wonder what going happen to the post office counters as the ones near me had been moved to inside the bargain booze.

Tom’s vehicle rental too! We had a couple of rigids from this place and current have a 16 plane MAN on hire from them.

If they have gone bust does that mean we get to keep the unit lol

I think it’s shameful that a great institution like the Royal Mail was reduced to sharing space with a company like Bargain Booze.

And I don’t think it’s a shock they are in administration. Who honestly goes to a place like this to buy alcohol rather than a supermarket. I’d never step foot in a place like that for the shame that I’d be seen and branded an alcoholic.

And that wouldn’t happen if you bought your booze in a supermarket ■■ :unamused:

Well, let’s see if I deliver there tomorrow as they have planned

Don’t forget that Bargain Booze recently ‘rescued’ the Central newsagents chain from P & H.

That’s a lot of pubs, restaurants and off-licences, who will try to step in? Does DHL have the infrastructure to cope?

Back in the day, you could tell what kind of area you lived in by whether there was a ‘Wine Rack’, a "Threshers’ or a ‘Bargain Booze’ at the end of the street.

I used to pass the Bargain Booze at the bottom of Stroud Road, Gloucester every morning on the way to work…always with a 26-tonner being unloaded. It was a very busy shop!

Includes the Matthew Clark drinks wholesale and distribution network too.
2,600 jobs being reported on news if they go under.

■■■■ really? I was going to apply there as a class 2… It’s Monday to Friday and £12 per hour… Currently I earn less and have to work weekends! Where did you hear this info?

When I worked for tradeteam I always delivered more to the Merthyr Tydfil hub then the Swansea and Aberystwyth combined

Doing dray work there have been rumours about Matthew clark and Conviviality being in trouble for weeks but haven’t put them up on here.
I hope either k&n or tradeteam can take them over. Or they can be split by the administrators and taken over by other wholesalers to reduce jobs loss. Wasnt long ago that P&h went under, lots of dray teams going to be out of work if they can’t. Can imagine the brewery’s are looking at the situation with some hard decisions to make.

Seems “Conviviality” the parent company are in trouble. They acquired both Matthew Clark and Bibendum over the past two or three years. They own Bargain Booze and Wine Rack directly although store owners may be franchisees.
They supply other stores restaurants and even, according to the Telegraph, Wetherspoons?
Looks a lot bigger than a few discount off licences.
Seems someone forgot a £30million tax bill was due, but they’ve asked investors for £125m? Business finance is beyond me, but it don’t look too clever at all.
Telegraph also suggests PWC are going in, so it isn’t likely to cease trading overnight.
And so long as the Great British Public want booze someone will have to deliver it, and rail or air freight don’t seem likely alternatives!
Don’t Panic!

yet.

If it does go dry, let me know and I’ll do my best to bring over your favourite tipple,

at a small fee of course :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:

But seriously though a lot of people once again are going to lose their jobs, probably because of senior management’s errors, greed, complacency, who knows.
Not just in the shops, but the Matthew Clark distribution warehouse staff and dray-men, I think there are about 12 depots in the UK, one that I’ve delivered to is in Park Royal. Sad times for them.

Unless consumption of goods goes down no one really loses their jobs.

You might get another name on your truck. And you might wear a different uniform. You may even get a different wage but you still need men to drive the lorries to deliver the same goods.

If all the bargain boozes close it doesn’t mean people will drink less. They will just buy it from different places meaning that the jobs driving will go to that place.

Isn’t Bargain Booze a franchise? If Bargain Booze go pop shopkeepers could presumably just join another franchise such as Premier (Bookers)/Best One (Bestway)/One Stop/Nisa/Londis etc. so not all is lost.
