Currently I use a multi-compartment rucksack to take the gear I need for day driving but its a bit of a PITA to use so I’m in search of a new bag and was hoping some forum members could recommend some good bags that are easy to get on with.
It needs to have several compartments to accommodate the following:
I had a standard holdall which eventually started to fall apart and when i spilt some milk unnoticed in it finished the thing off.
So had a poke nose round the town, eventually spotted a medium sized strong nylon holdall which was taller than usual, also has retractable extending handle and 2 wheels so the option to tow it is there, big main compartment and two full length zipped section either side, none at ends.
Amazingly only a tenner.
My biggest problem is that these bags are not self supporting stiff like the pilots bag above (nice that) so your maps end up leaning over and as well as getting in the way get ruined, cured by nicking one of my wife’s stiff document folders and putting the maps and other papers in there, this keeps things upright and the bag is working out fine, large handles mean you can lay coat/overalls etc in handles on top of bag and carry it all one handed.
So, try a proper bag shop unless you can spot what you want on Amazon or ebay, to be fair there’s a good selection out there, sunday market stuff is usually crap.
Buy bigger than you think you need, by the time i’ve got some screen spray and a few reams of blue towel, brush, few tools various bits and bobs theres more weight and bulk than you would credit.
Got muscles on me muscles heaving the thiing up into the cab.
If you check out 7bags on eBay, they’ve 10% off at the moment. Not perfect but for just over a tenner it’ll do nicely. Big enough for truck atlas, hiviz, gloves, wproofs and sandwiches/flask, spare bulbs, ■■■■ nav etc. Pockets in front for pens, tachos/card odds and ends, wet wipes etc.
Do you class that as a class one bag then, if it has the option to tow ■■
Fwiw I use a picknick bag, large main body for flask, coffee, sugar, metal cup, crisps and pepparmi, and my iPad slips between the inner and outer, front part houses my chargers, dash cam, spare tacho rolls, tablets, knife and fork and teaspoon and other stuff like cable wraps etc. front compartment originally was for the crockery, suits me perfect as I have a 1.7l flask which is tall, bag stands up nice and have a couple of bungee’s to restrain it when not in a scania, also has retractable towing handle and mini wheels.
Martin:
Search Amazon for “Pilots Case”, you will find lots there that should do the job.
looks about the right size but could do with a shoulder strap.

As said, easily cured by putting your maps and other paper documents in a stiff folder.
Rigid bags like the excellent Pilots bag linked to above are expensive and have little room for expansion, a good choice if everything you will carry fits.
I’d be concerned about theft too, a normal holdall style bag doesn’t look like it contains any more than a lorry drivers usual rubbish, whereas a bag that looks like £50worth on its jack appears more likely worth the while smashing a lorry window and lifting for a thief.
I’ve just changed from a bag to a rucksack as I have to carry it across site and it’s easier in a rucksack. Got a ‘special forces rucksack’ from army surplus store. It’s got plenty of zipped compartments and is really tough. Not green either! Got it in black.
I use three bags, two large ones and a rucksack, I usually cycle to work so need a rucksack style one but its just not big enough for the stuff I carry with me

Reading your lists for requirements of how many kits you guys have, I’m amazed some of you get it in a ruck sack.
I have an article on this topic, where a number of different bags are suggested.
Perhaps it might be an interesting read.
Mod’s edit: Advert removed, a more interesting read might be the forum rules in your case. dd.
