It must be human nature to attempt to swerve out of the way of a vehicle. In that situation, would it be best to hit the breaks and keep it straight?
Swerving is just a natural reaction, he would definitely of been better hitting the car but he wouldn’t of had time to make that decision. I had a similar incident following a car in the inside lane, his bonnet came up, instead of moving gradually over to the hard shoulder he jumped on the brakes hard and came to a standstill. Swerved round him without hitting him but that wasn’t a decision I made, just natural reaction not to hit something

So as Norfolktrucker has pointed out, maybe more development should be taken at the learner stage of driving, in order to avoid these sad tragedies later in life.

Just done a little research and discovered that according to the Department of Transport and the Office of National Statistics, just over 20% of all motor vehicle journeys undertaken in the UK are on a Motorway.
However when learning to drive, drivers are not tested on Motorways, in fact it is an optional top-up course.

My wife is a driving instructor and she either offers Pass Plus or extra private tuition on motorway driving after passing their test of course and about 1 in 20 take her up on it, she says it should be compulsory even if it’s only for an hour.

So… On one hand, I’d like to think that I’m (along with the vast majority on here or otherwise) of quite a high standard when it comes to driving…I’m safe, courteous, don’t tear arse about and the job takes as long as it takes. On the other hand, you’ve got a middle aged bloke who was driving his wagon ■■■■■■ and nearly killed someone because he was to ■■■■ faced to take avoiding action or even notice what was occurring around him and (in another thread) the drug addict who ‘fortunately’ only killed himself…which type of driver do the public get to read about and pass judgment on…rarely the bloody good ones. And going back to the M25 smash, if people hadn’t/don’t read the report on what actually triggered the chain of events (the car pulling out), I wonder how many ‘non truck driving types’ will see the wagons smashed to buggery etc and instantly think that it was caused by one of the drivers falling asleep/■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ tele etc etc etc? They see a truck involved and the finger of blame is instantly pointed at us, despite the fact that (unbeknown) to the ‘non truck driving types’, the slightest sudden movement of the steering wheel in an artic when sat at motorway speeds, can and normally does lead to something ending very nasty as once their out of shape, all sorts of forces take over and we are just a helpless passenger.

If we’re in a situation whereby we’ve got people driving trucks who think that swerving right is a ‘natural reaction’ to someone pulling into their path from the hard shoulder or an entry slip.As opposed to the ‘natural reaction’ keep it straight and either stop and/or plough through whatever has pulled in front incorrectly or at least swerve left not right then the worst case scenario of cross over pile up situations will become more and more common.

They swap trailers at Crick. In that side road opposite where the white truck is parked in the picture. There’s often some M&S swapping going on there as well. Trailer swapping that is.

Easy source of blame we are. We are the biggest things on the road thus the most dangerous. It doesn’t help when you do have idiots that tear arse around giving us all a bad name.

I had a full blown barney with some prick on Twitter earlier who said, “usuall bullying truck drivers causing carnage and grief” when I told him what actually happend he come out with this beauty, " Well was he reading the paper, drunk or watching the to? He should’ve anticipated what was going to happen"!
I asked him how the ■■■■ can you anticipate a car coming off the hard shoulder straight onto the motorway from a standing start?! He still wouldn’t have it the bell end Read the Mail Online comments on it, they will get you ripping your hair out. The usuall trucks should be banned from lanes 1 and 2, should only be on the road between 7pm and 6am even though this crash hsppend between those hours and the ingenious one all goods should be transported by rail
All bollox and said by morons.

The scary thing is that seems to be the logic which too many nutters are going by when re joining a motorway from the hard shoulder or joining from an entry slip road.
For the information of all those who follow that idea it might be possible to ‘anticipate’ it but if you’re not in,or able to move into, lane 2 at that point and/or if the idiot also crosses into lane 2 there’s nothing that anyone can realistically do about it other than hold a straight line and brake or go for the nearside.
While for the information of all those presented with that situation going for the offside will inevitably be likely to cause a potentially massive crossover type pile up at least unless there is enough time to make certain that there is no traffic in or approaching in lanes 2/3.

What gets me wound up is these people who go on Twitter or Facebook, or comment on newspaper websites, about how they where late for work today, or missed a hair appointment, or didn’t get to watch Eastenders, because they where sat in traffic after a bad accident.
Maybe these idiots should take just a minute before they post these comments and realise that somebody somewhere has just had 2 Police Officers knock on their front door, and deliver to them some horrific news that has just changed their lives forever.
I’m sorry I had to get that off my chest. Rant over.

I’d have happily joined in on the Twitter rant…could’ve rounded a few others up as well! Where would we go if we were banned from lanes 1&2? I hate the thought of this ‘hard shoulder running’ as its regularly full of Euro’s parked up for the night or busted camper vans with no lights on…coming across any of that in the dark and you’ll get an exact replica of the M25 incident.

Yep, there is close and there is suicidle, but there is also leaving something getting towards the safe distance, which on a quiet day is more than a theoretical possibility, but on a busy day, the same muppetts that moan about trucks being dangerous, are happily jumping into that gap that was your safe stopping distance and with them there is no longer, and they will do this as the traffic is approaching junctions, standing traffic, road works etc. Why anyone wonders about the causes off accidents, wonder no more, Idiots
