As for equating sociaising with alchohol, what about a soft drink with a meal (the latter being the main reason for the visit to the pub in the first place with many trampers I know btw) does that increase your IQ in your eyes, and/or make you less ‘‘dumb’’ ?..I need to know these things.
Where are all these tipper drivers that ride dirt bikes after 4 pm, and visit restaurants exactly, is it some kind of food related motorcycle enthusiasts club or what?

Yeh I remember him, I’m still looking over my shoulder…NOT !.
It’s funny how all these type of guys suddenlly appear all at once on this forum every so often, (and usually all together, can’t think why that is btw ) they chuck in a few grenades and ■■■■ off for another 6 months or so.
Anyway, that said, I’m always amazed at how many on here view tramping, as if it’s the ‘Anti Christ’ of truck driving.
The thing about us not getting paid hourly for downtime I don’t get the logic…who tf does in any industry that involves working away from home.
Tramping has always been the same, it’s up to you how easy or hard a life it is.
You can do it as Maoster says as if you’re some kind of masochist purposely creating hardships for yourself, and putting yourself under constant unnecessary pressure (the way non trampers usually view it)
Or if youhave any sense make it as pleasant and bearable as you can when away from home, do your job but not to the extent of being on your way to a heart attack.
I would not have done it as long as I have if most of me didn’t enjoy it, and I would not have lasted 6 months doing it in the same way that some do it…but then I’m just a fat old dumb guy with a low IQ, so what the hell do I know.

I did a job for many years that I disliked simply because it paid well and gave me a good pension. On the other hand some days I enjoyed it. It is like the rest of life good bits bad bits and it is up to us to make the best of it.

Same here and have bumped into other drivers with a similar story. I happen to enjoy tramping (and even have friends, a wife and kids- shocker!) I call it a magical mystery tour because I never know where I’m going next until I’ve tipped. In the old job it felt like groundhog day with the odd mediocre day thrown in. Driving lorries I get more good days than bad and I find every day different. In answer to the OP, I have no idea what the average take home pay is for a tramper. It depends on various factors such as where in the UK the company is, what sort of work the company does and other things in the T&C’s such as overtime rates/bonuses etc etc. I’m not going to tell you what I earn because I can’t be arsed with a long winded debate on the matter. Put it this way, I’ll never be rich but that’s not my goal in life.
It was ideal. New places, new people and latterly in Europe new food (provided it wasn’t still wriggling).
Now I’m a day man, I do a good days worth of dealing with idiots and then go home.
I feel no hostility to trampers as long as they’ve bothered to wash (most of them do) and don’t throw bottles of ■■■■ all over the place, they can go and do what they want. The trampers I talk to couldn’t care less about my ‘day man’ status.
We both do the same thing and that’s move goods from A to B.
