Those who have the advantage of having been in the industry for some time do sometimes wrongly use the phrase “Class 1.” We know what we mean, but just look at the newbies’ forum to see the effect this has.
The legal definition of “Class 1” changed on 1/1/97, that is an unarguable fact of law.
Point#1 There is much confusion about “Class 1” and LGV C+E in the newbies forum. Their training and books tell them that they should use the phrase “LGV.” QUESTION: Could their confusion arise because people still insist on using language that is out of date by more than 10 years
Point#2 If you were in court charged with x,y or z offence comitted whilst driving a lorry, QUESTION: Would you refuse to recognise the charge, or the court’s authority, because they don’t use the same words for it as you Would you call the court “picky”
I think they might offer you an explanation, so would you prefer to have that here, or red-faced when you discover the reality as they’d explain it to you
I wouldn’t dream of picking on anybody, but then again, I would object if somebody picked on me who turned out to be incorrect. I’ve said many times on here that I’m always willing to learn. I’ve been in the industry for over 30 years, and I still have things to learn. On that basis, don’t we all

I stand corrected
I know this is’nt really the THREAD to start going on about Class 1/2 LGV 1 HGV licence C+E ETC Blah Blah,I personally have always called it a Class 1 licence as many people on here do,you are not gonna get a time where everybody calls it LGV 1 & 2 etc,for (1) they will probably call it something else in a few years just for the sake of changing it and (2) how many companies advertise for Class 1 & 2 drivers?..a hell of a lot more than are asking for LGV 1 & 2 drivers and (3)A lot of the senior
drivers call it Class1 and by doing so hand it down to the younger amongst us
Just let people call it what they will for ■■■■■ sake, most people understand what your talking about
bikemonkey:

I’ll admit that I might be missing something here, but is what you wrote a justification that you’re correct??
bikemonkey:
(1) they will probably call it something else in a few years just for the sake of changing it
That might well be perfectly correct for only time will tell, but would you still stick to “HGV” then as well?
bikemonkey:
(2) how many companies advertise for Class 1 & 2 drivers?..a hell of a lot more than are asking for LGV 1 & 2 drivers
The answer to that is that plenty of companies do ask for “HGV” drivers. Are they correct just because they are companies? Who is correct, those companies or the law?
bikemonkey:
(3)A lot of the seniordrivers call it Class1 and by doing so hand it down to the younger amongst us
Just because they are “senior” does that, of itself, make them correct? Using your own measure, would a “senior” with several further qualifications have any input to this?
It may be that you require further proof. If so, have a look at DVLA Swansea’s website, or the Dft, or VOSA’s You don’t even have to believe me, that’s not compulsory, but by citing your 1, 2, & 3 above it seems that you’re aware of a higher authority on some matters. Is it that you’ll only go so far up that ladder until people stop using the words that you use, or do you think it fairer if you went all the way up so that you could see the whole picture?
bikemonkey:
Just let people call it what they will for [zb] sake, most people understand what your talking about
You’re right, most people do understand, but have you any sympathy for the newbies? Their training and books tell them to call it an “LGV.” Is the author of the book actually incorrect? Is it ok provided that “most” people understand, or would it be better if we all spoke the same language?
I don’t have the slightest objection, people can call it what they like. I’d say that it comes down to professionalism, it’s a free country so you can call that what you like as well.
jedimaster:
I stand corrected
Not corrected. It was about out of date language. All I did was to give you a choice by pointing it out to you.
HGV or LGV; my preference is HGV Class 1 driver though when asked I state that ‘I’m a professional lorry driver’, which I feel covers all the bases

I’m arguing. The law changed in 1991.
Why not stick to the topic?
This is supposed to be about the average age of people using this site.
It’s not an exercise in chopping about eight foot of ‘legislation’ off a website to argue whether or not we should call it Class 1/2/3 or C / C+E.
To be honest ‘newbies’ (what is this Deal or No Deal?) will soon learn what is what by experience. I can’t see that it matters. If they want to take a step up and do another licence they will soon be put right when they get their application form.

Yeah, I noticed just after I’d got off my soapbox!
HGV, C and C+E, LGV, Class 1, 2 and 3 drivers are very good at getting on their soapbox. This applies to drivers of any age.
Did you see what I did there? Mentioned age to get it back on topic. Neatly done eh?
