Apparently according to the DSA the average truck driver is 55 years of age…I’m a little below that by 10 years and about 14 on the road…
21 been in driving job 4 weeks lol worked as an apprentice for DAF trucks before that
50 Got a BMC 550G at 17, didn’t realise I was supposed to be 18 before I could drive it till after I was. Full time HGV from 1985 till 2007 kept 1 truck but only worked part time, sold it in 2011 and just did relief driving, which is almost full time again ATM
I suppose diesel is in my blood, although I wouldn’t say I was ‘cab happy’
Oh and I started off on Farm feed, hay and straw, then onto steel and general. Spent 22 years on bulk, and have come almost full circle back to steel and general.
54 years old , class 1 since 1983 , been to the moon and back in miles
56 did my class1 at 23 to transport our own livestock in our skitterbox. Pretty much let it all lapse until my divorce cleaned me out in 2009 and I needed to earn some dosh ASAP. Planned on just doing a bit now and again (hence agency) but been full-time at the same place since mid October.
Since I started driving I’ve always tried to build a good reputation and taken pride in doing a good job, can’t say I’ll be too upset when I do finally hang up the keys though.

People like Bestbooties will have to train for their DCPC or hang up the keys.Shows what a crock of zb the whole thing is.I know folk from the bus side who have been removed from the industry ,the fact that some of them were happy to pass on knowledge and give the benefit of their experience was of no consequence. This same state of affairs is going to happen in haulage as well.
Thanks RobRoy…and ive just started the process of renewing my licence yet again..and i
