Talking to various people recently about the above, it amazes me just how many people dismiss autos without driving them. My boss and his Dad aren’t fans, even though we had a good demonstrator (CF) with one last year, I reckon when a new motor is planned I reckon it’ll be a manual 'box.
Same thing with the Mrs when we bought our car last October. I wanted an auto, not the old style type but a powershift type like the in laws have on their X5. The wife was dead against because "autos are crap, lazy and expensive to run etc etc)and as Kia autos are crap we bought a manual Kia (she uses it 90% of the time anyway, and a good car to be fair).
The flour mill I used to work for wouldn’t buy autos because the self appointed “senior driver” said they were “crap and for lazy ■■■■■■■■■■ Ex army do as told without questioning sort…
Even customers on sites slate auto trucks without ever having used one.
It’s a matter of personal preference. In the case of cars or trucks it’s usually more a case of the auto fan boys trying to force their preferred choice on those of us who prefer manuals rather than vice versa.IE if anyone likes autos fine but keep their preference to themselves instead of keeping on trying to justify their preference against those of us who say no thanks.
On that note it makes me laugh when Merc sellers often advertise their poxy paddle shift autos as manuals to compete with VXR8 sellers offering the real thing. No doubt then moaning at the manual buyer who walks away along the lines of you should try it.Answered by which part of no thanks I want a big V8 with a manual box and unlike an old school Jag or even Merc the later ones are virtually impossible to convert, don’t you understand.
if I had to have a Volvo,i’d want one with I-shift. anything else i’d rather have a manual.
much prefer a manual box off road.

Yea it is amazing how many people feel qualified to comment on them, despite never having driven one.
on a 2012 daf cf and i would have the chap that signed off this auto gearbox a hard boot in the nuts worst g/box ever give me a manual any day 22yrs exp various trucks and hps local and distance
I would love to have Auto everything.
Only driven an auto actros but can’t fault it on normal roads but get one in a quarry and it’s back to manual as the auto box doesn’t like rough ground. End up locking in a gear and foot to floor for most gradients and hope it doesn’t stop.
Driven both in all kind of terrain and weather. I like the autos, especially in congested towns.
The worst auto I’ve ever driven was 2016 Daf, piece of garbage, gearbox slow as a turtle and the truck felt powerless.
The best in my view is this:

I’ve driven the predecessor of dt12, which was excellent as well.
Auto all the way
I went from a Premium with an I-Shift to a Scania with a 3 pedal Opticruise and the difference is like night and day. The full auto box was amazing to drive whilst this Opticruise can be a pain. I don’t buy that nonsense that a manual gives you more control.

In the sense that a manual has an interface between flywheel and gearbox input in the form of the right foot, human brain and the left foot, that provides a finely controlled level of clutch slip to help with slow manoeuvreing.Or can see the terrain and situation ahead using the human eye and brain etc to select a correct gear well in advance for just two examples,a manual certainly does provide more control.
On that note many drivers don’t buy all the auto nonsense. So why not just agree to disagree and employers just base buying policy on the idea of providing drivers with the choice.

How many times have you driven in proper winter condition or mountainous terrain with both auto and manual? Yes it gives you control, but technologies are advancing and autos from 10-15 years ago are not like most new autos like DT12.
done both ishift all the way
How many manufacturers now have autos as standard? MAN, Volvo and Merc?

You have never driven an auto truck which to the auto is crap brigade is an automated manual transmission.
I do three trips a day to a landfill site in a artic never do I feel I’ve got stuck where a manual would of kept me going.
As soon as I go off the road it’s in to manual and I choose the gears. Same as in certain conditions on road il over ride it to get the best out of it.
Like any computer or mechanical system it’s only as good as what it’s programed or told what to do.

I’ve chained up on snowy mountains with both and I have to say, the ATM is better in really bad conditions, as long as it’s a good one like I shift, every change, up or down is perfectly synchronised and super fast so the break in power delivery is minimised and you don’t lose traction.
I’ve also been stuck in an icy rut after hooking up a trailer and had to rock back and forth to get moving with both and again, the ATM performed well, every bit as good as a manual.
Has anyone driven an I-Shift dual clutch yet?
I personally don’t give a ■■■■ if its manual or auto aslong as the unit isn’t a bag of ■■■■■

Guy who did the abnormal weather driving module of my DCPC was a council gritter driver. He listened to everyone bleating on about how autos are crap in the snow and ice then chimed in and said that his gritter lorry was auto and he never got stuck. He then showed this video…
But autos are crap in the snow or could it be the driver??
