are all Volvo automatics I-shift or is it only on certain models?
HELLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Hi, not had much experience with smaller Volvos, although I think they’re based on the Renaults, so maybe not. Although I believe pretty much all FH’s are now sold with ishift the manual box is an option.

I think the lighter end of their range (FE and FL) has a transmission called ISync and the heavy end (FM and FH) has IShift.
ah rite that explains alot because the crowd I work for has 3 Volvo autos,an fh and two fm’s and they are held in the highest regards by all the lads and the boss aswell, ive never driven any other autos but I cant fault them either and its nice to know that ive been driving an I shift after hearing all the praise people on here have given them.

time ill tell ,but th softwear on the EURO 6 DAF AS Tonic is meant to be up to I- shift .but as I said time will tell
That’s the problem with DAF,s they’re 10years behind with the technology. Volvos will soon be coming out of the factory with idrive. 2 clutches with virtually no loss of momentum between gears. Of cause that’ll mean better fuel consumption.
@ kit builder the 16 speed MAN manual with comfort shift is a superb gear box & very rare nowadays as its an option over the standard spec auto box, one in 500 id say. Probably my favourite box, you lucky devil.
i have driven volvo fm9 auto when i used to drive bin wagons as i spent all day reversing down side streets and behind shops they are a dream to drive after christmas i,m doing my class 1 the driving school i,m using use daf with 4 over 4 gearboxes i cant wait to be honest but i do like the automatics i would imagine in inner city environments in an artic must take a lot of stress out of driving
the other week i drove an automatic and what an experience it was the day started after i did my daily walk round checks got in my vehicle and on the automatic gearbox i selected d for day mode as it went dark i selected n for night mode the truck would not budge an inch and the engine revved loudly and to make matters worse i was at the lights they were on red i wanted a quick get away so as the lights changed i put it in r for race mode hit the accelerator scared the hell out of me and wiped out the family behind anyone any ideas where i went wrong lol

seriously i think auto,s are a good thing in a lot of ways but i still want to learn to drive an artic with manual box oh btw top site this some really nice people on here
When I started with my employer, we had about 3 autos on the entire fleet (about 50 artics). Now we have only 2 manuals, and they are on local runs.
I prefer manuals mainly for the control and feedback. I also think lorries feel like lorries when they have manual boxes. Now that most lorries have lost the gearstick and clutch pedal I feel as if something essential has been lost. Lorries are becoming like cars, and one of the things which attracted me to lorry driving was the romantic distinction between a lorry and a car which I developed as a child. Using twin splitters and listening to the meaty note of a ■■■■■■■ always gave me a lot of pleasure. I felt as if I was connected to a real machine, whereas lately I feel as if I’m merely operating software. Two pedals and the feeble milk-float-esque whine of a euro6 hairdryer.
Having said all that, city driving really does feel much less tiring in an auto. But that’s no reason to actually drive one.
I have just bought another R480, this time with opticruise and I reckon its miles better to drive than the other with a gearlever, also has air allround, the ride is so much smoother.
switchlogic:
Eaton Twin Splitter. Best gearbox in the world. Even better in an ERF. God what an amazing combination. FH16 750? Pfffttt, I’d give it up in a second for a ERF with a Twin Split…
I absolutely agree. There’s nothing like a twin splitter to make you feel like a real driver!
I’d go for a manual any time. They’re more involving and suit my driving style better. I currently drive an auto DAF 105, but use it exclusively in manual mode. I really don’t like auto 'boxes at all.
