Oops let handbrake off
Paul
I just knew I was forgetting something. LOL
Pete
Lost me on this one.
I was only stating the basics of auto driving/training and if it’s more complicated than what I’ve stated I will stand to be corrected.
Paul
this is our gear selector on our new automatics, its rather simple to use. just put it in D for drive and off you go. there is a power button on the dash, which means it holds onto the gears a little longer and doesn’t block change. i only tend to use that button when going up a long hill.
if you want to change gear manually then all you have to do operate the stalk like the indicator lights to either go up or down the gears, but this is only useful when reversing if you want a faster gear (has 4 reverse gears) or to change the gear you want to set off in, bigger gear = faster get away.
to change from R reverse to forwards you just operate the stalk in the same way to flashing your headlights, just pull it back.
C finds crawler, not much use for that, until we get some snow perhaps.
got a new Volvo FH arriving in a few weeks, then all our big vehicles in the fleet will all be automatics, its worth the investment, £81,000 for the new c+e truck excluding trailer, average pass rate has gone from 70% to 95%!! which is frankly crazy, but i can certainly tell you its a lot easier to drive on test.
got any specific questions, just ask, but these volvos are perfect unlike some auto boxes, you don’t need the manual overrides, just put it in D and off.
oh, but we do have a hill start aid, press the button, apply footbrake, release handbrake plus find gap in traffic, do your normal routine, release footbrake (vehicle holds on hill), apply power (must be in drive) and it won’t roll back, easy. new artic unit has auto handbrake too, never do you have to touch the handbrake ever again, its fully automatic! so easy its getting to be a totally different world compared to what i learnt on.
it tells you what gear you are in on the screen in the centre console, so make sure you understand what its telling you, and N is for neutral or No gear, it will not start in gear and if you don’t take off the handbrake it will stall it.

In my opinion if you need help sussing out an auto box, in ANY lorry, then you really should be questioning your intelligence.I agree, yes there are different techniques used to switch modes etc, but you need to be a special kind of stupid to not understand the difference between Reverse, Auto/Drive, Manual and Neutral.
I assume its easy to use tiptronic etc because I have never done so - would I be able to figure any sort out without any assistance?
Used a bin lorry one ok - that was easy but silly - lever back to go forwards and lever forwards to go back = EH!! - which numpty designed that?
The word automatic sums it up really, you push a button, turn a dial, move a stick into A for Auto or D for Drive, push down on the accelerator and it does the rest…
I totally disagree that people need to be told how to do the simple things in life, it removes the ability to think for yourself or work things out.
The dumbing down of society is turning people into robots who cannot do the simplest tasks without instructions or risk assessments.
WELL SAID MARK!
I have compiled a video with all the auto gearboxes shown.

I was driving an atego telligent for weeks before accidently spotting how to block change in manual mode. What other things can the gearbox do that I haven’t spotted yet. One day I’ll be a driver, but only when I’ve asked enough questions and read enough intruction books.
Our new Ivecos have 3 buttons: R N D. I’m not bothering to explain what they do! Except to say that for “crawl” hold the selector for a couple of seconds and it comes up on the console display as SLOW. Touch the button again for normal. Touch the button twice if (for some strange reason) you want to change gear manually which is simply up and down on the right hand stalk.
Simplicity is the key for training - and it doesn’t get any more simple than that.
Pete
I think the following video explains it all!!!
PMSL!!
Seriously, the nicities are missing - but so what??

Let’s hope nobody gets a scania, they’ll be stumped. Very impressed you’ve managed to get through that many different vehicle’s in the timeframe.

Same with the Volvo auto.
I know it’s a auto based thread, but here is a clip on my MAN 8 speed slap over gear box recorded whilst training today.
Hope some people find it interesting.

If the handbrake is automatic and u don’t need to touch it how come it will stall if I don’t take it off
If u take test in an auto truck does that mean u can only drive autos ( same as a car )
If u take test in an auto truck does that mean u can only drive autos ( same as a car )
No. You can pass on an auto and get a full manual licence provided you already hold a manual car licence.

That shouldn’t be allowed imho.
