Hello ocean clipper dave poulton here. Iā€™m still chugging up and down the road to manchester 4 nights a week. jacques eh. the good old days. I used to enjoy driving the old scammell. I dont get on here much. I can never seem to find my way about. best to contact email. david.poult@gmail.com

Hello Dave. I doubt we have ever met, but I made friends with dear old John Williams and heard so much about you. I always had you down as an unlikely middle east candidate from photos I have seen. You have to forgive me for that.

I first met John in Hungary when he was between the border with an expired Hungarian permit. It must have been new years eve if they ran annually and I always had a spare one. I had already read ā€œthe bookā€ and was quite proud to tell my boss I had met John Willy.

He argued that John was working out in the Emirates as a yacht mechanic and thought I had been duped. It was only a couple of weeks later that John drove in the yard with my spare permit and George Brook (LOBO) had to eat his words.

The name Dave Poulton cropped up many times while we reminisced and at many other times when we met up or ran together. There will never be anything done in transport as exciting as the Saudi stuff, not now, not ever and for that you will remain one of those heroes along with many who went before you and after you.

Hero Worship at its best, please call again and keep this great thread alive.

Malc

Good God Malc, was it LOBO from BIrmingham, thatā€™s another name that I had forgotton about. Was it something to do with Lloyds Overland or something  and didnā€™t Depression Ron work for them at one time.

Regards Steve.

I ran with a couple of LOBO 's drivers in the 80ā€™s on occasion there where two bothers Pete and George Brookes? and a lad called Dennis who stuttered very badly.

I knew that chap Dennis who stuttered badly, he did a lot of Greece and I made a small fortune out of him playing ā€˜Snapā€™

i knew a driver when I was on the buses who stuttered very badly and when he went on the one man buses we asked him what he would do if he had a passenger who stuttered badly and wanted to know what the fare was he said after few minutes ā€œi would wave them through for nothing otherwise if I talked to him with a stutter he might think I am taking the ā– ā– ā– ā–  and lump me oneā€ fredm

Well, i must say my memory has been jogged again, havnt been so far on this blog in a long time, the fountain, ali baba r/aboutā€¦hotel sanjar, in the old chemiran road, dave poultonā€¦fred topham, worked with fred when he was with roy braford in dagenham, trucks used to be parked in the lorry park at becktonā€¦nice to see roger rabbit stuffing his face, ( hi rog ) and yes young phil has lost a lot of weight ( how the ol man ) last saw him on the north circular ) simon international, now theres a name you cant forgetā€¦there are many more of course, for the wrong reasons   Gavin ( GS ) nice to know your alive and kicking, spose you could say the same about me eh ! still at it, still at Solstorā€¦only 3 days a week now ( although havnt worked for 2.5 monthsā€¦

hello wheelnut
I worked for johnny williams for a couple of years. drove his old f88 ā€œVictoriaā€ lovely old motor. did mostly poland. material out and shoes back. then I did 2 years for barry barnes. heā€™d drop a tractor unit up to my house and Iā€™d pick up a trailer load at astran yard which was only 3 miles from where I live. Iā€™d deliver the load sell the outfit and fly home. cant be bad Ā£1500 plus expenses for 3 weeks work. do you remember trevor marks? I worked for him about one and a half years. about 2000. on the first trip I did 4 in 1. I went uk-abu dharbi, back to italy then 2 times from ancona-jubail and then on the way back bob paul phoned me up and said would I do a doha as well, so I did. did 43000km in 14 weeks without coming home. these days I have trouble sitting in the driving seat for 4 hours without my legs hurting like hell. I think it;s called getting old. 69 now. was going to pack up next june but might stay on till next xmas. Iā€™m sitting at work in my old camper van at the moment. going to oldam tonight, manchester tomorrow night and then home for 4 days. when I get home must see if I can get a pic of one of my trucks on the avater place on the page. got the night heater working in here. need it. it gets cold sleeping in a van in a transport yard. noisy too. they steam clean right next to me.

if youve got a few quid spareā€¦

Hi Tracker6666 left you PM.

Just a thought but did any of the ex Astran or Middle East drivers on here know the driver who took the author of Cola Cowboys on his trip to M/E for the book?
I think his name was Trevor somebody and was quite an established M/E hand at that time.

No particular reason for asking, just wondering thats all, and was the tale of him being nearly lynched by a mob of Turkish villagers, leaving scars on his neck true, or abit of journalistic licence

Cheers, bullitt.

PS, come on chaps, about time we had some more tales and memories (with pics if possible) of those Middle East heydays.

ƂĀ“Bullitt. The story is true try looking for a back copy of one of the trucking magazines as it had his story in their with a picture of the scars on his neck
