Just a note to let you old middle east drivers know that Billy Thomas [Hafod farms] retired from running his truck last week.
I imagine some of you will have met him on your travels.

When I lived in the Middle East, I used to trade “Drinks” (ahem!) for cans of bacon from the drivers I knew. Never criticize canned bacon until it becomes prized fobidden fruit!

I once had that tinned bacon with someone I was running with (Don’t remember who) and it was very enjoyable, I then tried everywhere to get some but to no avail, I wish I had known that you had captured the market, and from that day to this I have never seen it, Fred.H

I only ever saw it in Hungarian supermarkets, but have bought loads of it.
Szalonna is the Hungarian for Bacon
I used to stop at a supermarket just outside Budapest (Eastern side) where I would buy the tinned bacon by the carton. About twenty four tins per carton I think. It was wrapped in wax paper and then rolled up inside the tins.
Great tasting alternative to the bacon that we are all used to !! It was more like streaky bacon and worked very well, especially East of the Bosporus !! Just pealed off the labels for Saudi.
I used to give some tins to my friends in Doha who were yearning for the “pig”.
Happy days.

And, as if by magic, here it is…
I can taste it…Bacon Bacon Bacon…

Hi Gavin, that Hungarian Bacon was the best I ever tasted, I didn’t know that it had gone from Hungary to be packed in The USA before returning to Hungary.
The shop at The Containers sold bacon in plastic packs & that was just as good.
Dave.
On the “Volvo F10, F12, F16” thread on this forum, on page 12 there is a pic showing in the back ground a green H E Payne box trailer. On the rear of the box trailer is some Arabic writing and the signage suggesting they ran a M/E service. Did they ever run down that way?? Have never heard them being mentioned before regarding M/E work. Maybe TruckerAsh might know.
Did any of the M/E old hands ever encounter them when down that way?

Thats part of Richard Paynes restored Volvo F88 and fridge trailer taken at Gaydon classic commercial show a few years ago.

I was told that the OHS Sed Atki’s had been a cancelled Greek order that were begging for a good home. This i think was about the time that “suhtie” had been stopped from buying any more Macks. They were fitted with the 350 or 400 ■■■■■■■ engine. I cannot remember if they were used to go to the middle east , or if they were used for change overs in Munich or Istanbul. Regards Jamie.
I remember the Greek spec. 400 Series being built at Walton-le-Dale - and I remember trying to catch one of the factory drivers heading out through Higher Walton in one, when I was in my car. At 65 in a 40 zone, he was still getting away from me…
I recall being told at the time that they had the 335 ■■■■■■■ and 13-speed. There was a brochure produced for the “Seddon Atkinson International” model, and which featured photos of one of the OHS machines.
Hi,
The OHS Seddon Atki’s did go to the middle east, There’s some pics on here… somewhere, ? ask Truckerash, maybe on his 80’s thread.

Hi Bullitt; Mechanic is right, the trailer belongs to Richard Payne who runs HEPayne with his father David. Richard has a restored F88 and matching trailer which is what you got a glimps of. He has it all “done up” as if it were on the M/E run, but it - nor any other Payne trucks - never went there. Just a “dream” to have the 88 done up like it did the run. I am surprised you haven’t seen it. Photos of it all over the place! Ash.
Cheers Ash, didnt think that Paynes had run down that way. Hadnt noticed it on any previous pics either!

Was that 88 that’s done up like ‘it did the run’ by the same bloke who does up BMWs for Nigerians?

not really the done thing, but an acknowledgement to Mr John Toulson and his website for these photos may suffice.
obama just told the president of syria to get the ■■■■ out or else. Any news from boys running down at the min?
AFAIK nobody is going down at present, my mate is first in line to go and he was sitting at home as of this afternoon
