On a slightly more serious note, if they shut down syrias borders, and you cant/wont go via iraq, have any of the old hands done saudi any other way, for example a ferry from greece to egypt then overland to say jordan or straight into saudi, i dont have my map with me at the minute?.Suggestions for alternative routes may be handy, if it gets impossible to transit syria.has nayone everdone egypt with a truck?

Carryfast has his own ideas.

Carryfast, you may well have already checked out this lot, Harbour Shipping, but they show a service direct to Tripoli from Genoa.

If you wanted to get to Tunis then there is a service from Marseille which would save you using the the Frejus / Blanc Toll route.

harbourshipping.co.uk/ferry_ … ve=Tripoli

What ever you end up choosing, good luck with your endevour and keep us in formed. Someone has to be the first to try it!!!

Thanks for that info bullitt I had’nt looked into those other ferry options which you put there.I like that Harbour Shipping idea as using the boat to Tripoli instead of Tunis would save even more running distance and fuel which might more than pay for using the Blanc or Frejus route.I’ll check out the price for the crossing with Harbourshipping soon and it would be interesting to find out if it was even cheaper than the Genoa-Tunis route.

When I was doing M/East 20 odd years ago when the turks introduced transit taxes I enquired at the Egyptian Embassy about transiting Egypt definite NO only place allowed to go was Port Said only, may have changed though,I was also doing hanging beef to North Africa for about 3 years and occasionally had to go to Algiers which was ok to get there but ferry left same day so no chance of catching that, which meant you had to wait for next ferry which was unscheduled so one day decided to try and transit overland to Tunisia, no way out and no way into Tunisia even with a discussion over coffe on how to resolve this problem, wink wink. One major handicap in North Africa, away from the Agents office very few people speak English, and their French is a localised dialect which makes communication difficult, hope this doesn’t put you off but my thinking is that if there was a cheaper way of doing the job to m/e it would be well known by now regards Hughie

Port said isnt that far away ! If ya landed there it dont look too far on the map…Says he with his tpt manager hat on…, i fear however, tripoli may be , first a bit too far away and b also in a war situation…

Hey guys

you could always work your way down to Bandar Abbas and take the RoRo ferry to either Kuwait, Sharjah or Dubai…Could be a challenge…

Hi RDF, is it possible for brit’s to get an Irani. transit Visa nowaday’s?? If it is then it would possibly be cheeper to transit Iran and RoRo from Bander Abbas than pay the Syrian and Jordanian Taxes…
There again if the Brits cant get a transit Visa for Iran, Then this maybe leaves another opening for our East European Brothers.

Good plan, just as soon as i find where bandas abbas is…!

If you look at the most northern tip of the UAE, it’s on the other side of the Gulf, to the north.

Hi Jamie…Not really sure about the transit, but you can get an entry visa, having said that, not at the Iranian Embassy in Kuwait at the moment as they have just kicked them out for spying  …Trust you are keeping well…

Wasn’t the reason for the Brits getting much of the work originally because Hungarocamion couldn’t get them. I seem to remember something where Hungarocamion employed some British drivers just to service a contract.

Brits driving for Hungarocamion…. I don’t think so, albeit if I am wrong I am confident that I will get corrected…. .

I think Hungarocamion were either owners of, or part owners of Grad Linz which did have some Austrian and German drivers.

Those Transmed stickers in the windscreen were a sign that the firm was a good one, I never had to use their services, but was glad to have the cover just in case…

I had Transmed for years & had to call on their services when my Dad died, they had me home from Athens within 20 hrs, they then paid me £600 for the drivers wages to drive the truck back, I was lucky as Laurel was there at the time & She loaded it in Greece tipped it in the UK & then gave it back to Me. I can recommend Transmed 100%.

Hi Steve

I spoke to Ken the other week too on the phone He said He was going to have a gander on here :open_mouth:

Great to see this thread is still thriving, especially with regard to any new possible routes out if Syria is closed!!

Come on Carryfast, spill the beans, how far did you get with your research into transiting overland through Egypt■■?

im still here

Im thinking that a ferry from iran into uae or kuwait doesnt seem such a bad idea, , as it costs £400 each in taxes to go via syria and jordan anyway, curious for a ferry price, , visa availabilty and timings, not a bad idea, , has anyone done it?..

Let me see now in 1964 I took a ferry from cyprus to Tobruck drove along the coast to Derna in Lybia picked up my Antar and drove to palastine, the problem was I was wearing a British Army Uniform at that time which was shorts, short sleeve shirt and desert boots ,while on this journey I tasted my first glass of the famous saudi whisky one glass of tea no milk and 25 sugars    tea boiled in the round kettle we all aquired ,but not on the gas but a hole dug in the sand and filled with camel grass,a large portion of goat cultets and rice, supplied by three locals in enchange for my tins of compo cheese you can get through these countries but only with a heavy recovery truck and a large centurian tank on the trailer   ,happy days

a couple of years ago Iranian transit tax was 2000 dollars.

Well, after finding my map, i reckon that if it carrys on, we shall be going into haifa on the ferry, and then transit to jordan and then into saudi, however, we will need a new passport when syria opens and hope that they have no way of finding out that we have done it.Comments pls !

Is it not a problem in Saudi?

The last bloke to study a “Road Map” in that area was Ariel Sharon and he has been in a PVS coma for over 5 years :stuck_out_tongue:

It seems Haifa or Gaza looks doable.

Having a few extra passports is not a problem, everybody had 2 or 3 anyway to get Visas renewed and keep hidden away
