Hullo,
I only tipped there once :frowning: , I thought that they were in New Cross, down an old side street on a bit of a hill, a bit of a ramshackal old place, busy as all hell though. Mind you it was a very long time ago, so I’m probably wrong.
Cheers, Archie.

Hallo,

Ein Foto aus dem Jahr 1975, von hier aus sind es nur noch 5 bis 7 km nach Londra Camping.
Ganz vorne sieht man ein Volvo F89 GB 290 Richtung Kapikule.

thanks for the picture of the transcon draw bar that was my grandads lorry and i also have that picture im trying to track any of the old drivers because my grandad has always told me that that was the best job he had and would like to see the oldtimers again. my grandad also worked for a company called falces which run f88s does anyone remember them?

I have just had a P.M. from a new Trucknet member called Spare Tyre who turns out to be John Roberts    I am sure that there are one or two old fellers who remember John and he has told me that he and Harry Savage are now both retired and that they keep in touch.
On a another thread Jacdaw mentioned a driver in the Middle East in the seventies from Prestwich in Manchester and I can’t think of the name of the owner driver who did Middle East in the early eighties from Prestwich who I think ended up with three trucks. I remember that he was a Greek/Cypriot and that Dave Hammond once drove for him so can anybody remember his name ?.
John, here are a couple of old faces that you once worked with on this photo from Barry, can you put any names to them. It looks like Eric has nominated Stan to buy all the bacon butties and if bullitt looks at the back he might catch a glimpse of Stans blue Volvo F12.

Merry Christmas to everyone on Trucknet.
Best regards Steve.

mushroomman:
And Ian, you did mention some time ago about another Chapman and Ball driver called Johnny Roberts, well here is another photo that somebody gave me and when I asked who this guy was I was told that it was John Roberts so lets hope that somebody will be able tell us if it is John or not.

Regards Steve.

Steve,
I don’t know if it’s due to any member of this BB or pure coincedence, but I found out Johnny Roberts joined this BB yesterday.
He has not made any postings yet but we have exchanged a few PM’s.
After 30 years it’s great to hear from a dear mate.
We hope to have our own reunion next year,God willing,(Insh’Allah)

freshir:
Don’t know if you knew Len Humphries but he phone me about a month ago he’s 83 now and living in Cornwall, there’s a man to sit and talk to about his experiences down the Gulf, smashing bloke,

Lennie Humphries,my God,another blast from the past.
I remember running with Lennie a couple of times.
He could not resist buying duty free whiskey in the duty free shop in Bulgy and hiding it somewhere under his trailer to smuggle into Saudi. If you were with him at the Saudi border, don’t park near to him!
As you say,he could talk non stop and keep you entertained. It’s good to hear he’s still going when we have lost so many much younger colleagues.

mushroomman:
… and if bullitt looks at the back he might catch a glimpse of Stans blue Volvo F12.

Hi there Steve, thanks for posting that. i looked at the pic before I read the text and I thought straight away, " I bet that`s Stan!!"

I cant believe how much younger he looks there, when would that have been taken, early 80`s maybe, …

Quite a bit older here!!

Merry Christmas to you and yours

Wish I could get my pic’s up to the same standard as some of these on here, this is an old one, It’s on the TAP line or is it Sarfend ?

Hi Ian, I would love to be a fly on the bar when you and John get together, now if John brought his mates Ken Corrigan and Alan Morrey along you would find plenty of material to finish off your book  .
As regards those two photos I am not absolutely sure if they are both of John as I have not seen him for over twenty three years so maybe John can tell me if they are both of him. There is a little story attached to that photo of Bullitt’s of Stan and John. I showed it to Dave Shawcross who told me that it was John and it was taken at a reunion in Blackpool a long time ago. Dave said that he arrived at the hotel where there was loads of laughter coming from the bar and he thought that they must of had a comedian on in the afternoon. All the staff at the reception were in stitches laughing at the two people who Dave could not see. Then he recognised the voices and realised that it was Stan and John who had arrived early and they were enjoying a few drinks with the locals. Hopefully John can tell us what actually happened and what was so funny at the time.

Re: Eddie, I spoke with Ed about 3 months ago, he phoned me completely out of the blue and I was completely surprised but very pleased to hear from him, he was going to contact Mick Bryant - Bobbie Power - Roy Hopkins to arrange a ‘meet’ so I will have to give him a nudge - all we would have to do is to find MILK-BAR somewhere suitable for
everyone. Don’t know if you knew Len Humphries but he phone me about a month ago he’s 83 now and living in Cornwall, there’s a man to sit and talk to about his experiences down the Gulf, smashing bloke, he could kid a duck off of a pond with a bucket of water, he lived for the day and never worried about tomorrow you never got bored with Len’s stories although you had been there got the ‘T’ shirt it was always good to hear his version, it’s people like this that we all miss now we are all ‘Self unemployed’ although you may still be at it. I also got a call last night from Kenny Ward one of old muckers, he calls me a couple of times a year, So if there is anyone out there who borrowed money off of me get in touch asap - Seasons greetings to everyone out there and wishing you all a great 2011 - Regards Fred

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but I’m new to this thread.
Herself bought me “Long Haul Pioneers” as a stocking filler. I was never involved in any overseas transport: mine was all UK, but reading the tales in this book, I wish I’d done it! I raise my hat to all of you who travelled that route in the 70s and 80s. Well done!

Hi - Yes I got paid ok when I got back no prob: there but what a way to run a company , can you imagine a certain person who processed the paper work running M/E operation ? I paid the fine for Mick 'cos it was a case of getting moving - I saved Tony getting a plane to come and sort it out and what did I get for it xxxx all - When we amalgamated and that person came into our office and prepared my first CMR,s etc; would you beleive it = I was asked to sign the CMR - and I then explained the document and who should have what ect: So to change the subject, are you in touch with any of the old faces? would be interesting to know = nobody seem to know what happened to Mick Gordon, I heard that he had throat cancer, chow for now - Fred

Hi freshir
I notice from a previous post thatn you drove for Wellams of Fleetwood, a friend of mine ,Pete Lynch, did a few trips for them, you may have known him. I wrote an article on his trips to the M/E which was featured in the May 2010 issue of Truck and Driver magazine, here are a few photos from the article
