Astran / Middle East Drivers

I got caught with PLG (night tax) in the window it cost me £15500 in 1992 quite a lump of money back then I can tell you, it was xmas week too oh such happy days!

Normally the biggest part of these fines was back duty, I got stopped back in 86 by a well known copper going into Widnes from the M62, he was famous for spotting out of date ‘Guiness labels’ with his binoculars. I’d taxed my wagon for 6 months at the ‘private HGV’ rate with the full intention of ‘doing it right’ next time!!! Well, next time came I thought the same as most of you about the number of days spent on UK roads and did it private again. :smiling_imp:

I’d ripped a trailer mud flap off in the snow in Sheffield Fruit Market and ‘Bino cop’ spotted it and pulled me just outside Widnes!! He jumped in the cab asking why I didn’t have a flap and wanted to see my doc’s, as I was on my way back from Spain I had everything he required. I was squirming a little in my seat when he pointed towards the back of my tax disc (with only 1 month left!!) and said, “I could see that was OK in me Bino’s”, phew!!! I loaded in Widnes and stopped outside India Buildings in Liverpool town centre, ran up to the ‘Corn Exchange’ and taxed it at the HGV rate.

Ross.

Ouch! I got off lighter than. a truck downrated to 24 tonne, but loaded at 40. private tax and a £1000 fine in 1988

When I got done The Feds where having a right old go at old 4x2 tractors & with the rate of duty being £3100 at the time there new thing was to times it by 5! Gang Of ****s mind you it was’nt my 1st offence for this type of behaviour so I got a good pasting, I always thought I was still a tad in front though like you do when your young & daft. A grand was still enough in 88 though Wheel Nut. Its funny though nowadays tax seems like small potatoes compared to the old days don’t you think?

just bought a copy of the book “TRANSORIENT 1960 1970 1980”. I know we are all waiting for the Astran book by Truckerash, but its a good book if you like plenty of photos. German/English text, not too many of British wagons, but you old M/E hands would probably recognise a lot of the foreign firms, & you would probably recognise a lot of the borders/roads/bridges/mountains etc. Chris Hooper gets a mention at the back by a couple of pictures of his 6x2 Transcon, & his ex-Dutch Scania 144 Topline (is he still running this? not heard much about him lately!).

you can pay my next special types disc then john  that £15.5k made me wince for you, especially at 1992 prices :open_mouth:

I am sure that you will all remember that even if you had paid the full correct U.K. road tax then you still had to pay your road tax through Austria, Yugoslavia, Turkey etc.
A.F.A.I.K. foreign trucks were exempt paying U.K. road tax, hence the odd British lorry with the Dutch number plates would be spotted now and again :open_mouth: .
Where was this level playing field  on the side of Ben Nevis  .
